Millions of Americans with limited incomes and disabilities get health coverage under the affordable care act/Obamacare from a joint state and federal program known as Medicaid. The enrollment period for this program is not limited, thus if you or a family member qualifies you can enroll almost immediately.
Medicaid for various age groups
- If you have children aged between 1 and 5 then there is no limit on resources. And, your family income limit is equal to 200% of the poverty level.
- For children aged between 6 and 18, there is no resource limit and the family income limit is lower than the income limit for younger children, and is equal to 100% of the poverty level.
- For children aged between 19 and 20 there is a limit on resources and the income limit is lower than the income limit for children under age 18.
- For men age 19-60 and women age 19 – 55 with income below 185% of the poverty level there is a program called Family Planning Waiver Program, with only family Planning Services covered under it.
Income limits for children
Eligibility for Medicaid is dependent on the income limit which varies with the age of the child and the number of family members.
- For children between the age 0 and 5 having family size of 1 the income limit is $2,043
- For children between the age 0 and 5 having family size of 2 the income limit is $2,753
- For children between the age 0 and 5 having family size of 3 the income limit is $3,464
- For children between the age 0 and 5 having family size of 4 the income limit is $4,174
- For children between the age 0 and 5 having family size of 5 the income limit is $4,885
- For children between the age 6 and 18 having family size of 1 the income limit is $1,294
- For children between the age 6 and 18 having family size of 2 the income limit is $1,744
- For children between the age 6 and 18 having family size of 3 the income limit is $2,194
- For children between the age 6 and 18 having family size of 4 the income limit is $2,644
- For children between the age 6 and 18 having family size of 5 the income limit is $3,094
Medicaid for Families with Dependent Children
Medical coverage for parents/ other guardians with household children aged 18 or under, and their own children under the age of 21, is provided by Medicaid for families with dependent children. A pregnant woman may also be eligible for Medicaid. Just as in the case of children, income limits are attached to Medicaid for families with dependent children.
Medicaid for Pregnant Women
Only services related to pregnancy are covered by Medicaid for Pregnant Women. A pregnant woman may apply for this program before or after she delivers. The family income limit needs to be equal to or less than 196% of the poverty level. A newborn may be eligible for Medicaid up to 1 year of age, without a separate application, if the mother is covered by Medicaid on the date she delivers.
