Non-Traditional Options: Redirect Health & MediShare

Alternative health plans can provide affordable coverage outside of the ACA Marketplace. Redirect Health is a medical cost-sharing program open to individuals, families and small businesses. Members pay a monthly contribution plus a cost-sharing amount when services are used. Unlike traditional insurance networks, Redirect Health allows you to see any provider nationwide and pays the provider directly, simplifying the billing process. Routine primary care is often covered at little or no cost, while hospitalization and specialist care are covered after an 80/20 cost-sharing arrangement with a maximum out-of-pocket limit.

MediShare is a faith-based health care sharing ministry designed primarily for individuals and families. Members contribute a monthly “share” and have an annual household portion similar to a deductible. Eligible medical bills are shared among members, aligning costs with a religious community’sshared values. Membership requires adherence to Christian lifestyle guidelines and may not be right for everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do cost-sharing plans differ from traditional insurance?
Cost-sharing plans like Redirect and MediShare are not insurance. Members contribute to a community fund that pays for eligible medical expenses. Plans typically include an annual cost-sharing amount and coinsurance. They may have coverage limitations and lifestyle requirements, so it’s important to review details before enrolling.

Can I keep my doctor?
Redirect Health allows you to see any provider nationwide, and they handle payment directly, so you’re not restricted to a narrow network. MediShare uses a large provider network and may require providers to accept certain pricing structures.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Medical cost-sharing plans may have waiting periods or exclusions for pre-existing conditions. ACA plans cover pre-existing conditions immediately, so we’ll help you compare options.
