Tanya (AI host): If I want to change my Marketplace health insurance because I’m moving or my job situation changes, how do I actually switch—or even cancel—a plan without ending up with a coverage gap? The steps and deadlines are trickier than most people realize.

Tanya (AI host): Welcome to Smart Coverage. Real Advice., the insurance podcast from The Jordan Insurance Agency. I'm Tanya, your host, and I'm here with Billy Jordan, a licensed insurance agent and the president of The Jordan Insurance Agency.

Billy Jordan: Glad to be here, Tanya. This is a question we get all the time, and there’s a lot to unpack. Let’s get right into how Marketplace plans work when it comes to finding, switching, or canceling your coverage.

Tanya (AI host): So first, what’s the basic process for switching Marketplace plans if something in my life changes?

Billy Jordan: If you’re switching plans because of a life change—like moving, getting married, or losing your job-based insurance—you usually need what’s called a Special Enrollment Period. Most of these events give you a sixty-day window to act, but the exact timeline depends on the event. You can’t just switch plans any time you want; the federal rules are pretty strict.

Tanya (AI host): So if I just don’t like my doctor, that’s not enough to switch mid-year?

Billy Jordan: Exactly. Wanting a new doctor or just not liking your plan isn’t a qualifying event. You’d have to wait for the annual Open Enrollment, which starts November first each year. But if you lose coverage or have a major life event, you might qualify for that special window.

Tanya (AI host): What’s one mistake you see people make with these enrollment periods?

Billy Jordan: A common mistake is assuming every Special Enrollment Period works the same way. For example, the sixty-day clock sometimes starts before your old coverage ends, not after. If you miss that window, you’re stuck until Open Enrollment. I had a client who moved to North Carolina, but waited too long to apply, thinking she had extra time. She ended up uninsured for several months.

Tanya (AI host): That’s a rough spot. Now, when I’m looking to compare or find a new Marketplace plan, what should I actually be looking at besides just the monthly premium?

Billy Jordan: Great question. You want to look at four things: the monthly premium, your annual deductible, copayments or coinsurance, and the maximum out-of-pocket limit. Those last two—copays and the MOOP—are where people often get surprised. Also, check if your doctors are in-network and your prescriptions are covered at a reasonable cost.

Tanya (AI host): So it’s not just about what you pay each month, but what you could pay if you actually need care?

Billy Jordan: Exactly. I saw one family pick the cheapest premium plan, but their main specialist was out-of-network. They ended up paying a lot out of pocket for care they thought would be covered. Always confirm your providers and meds before you enroll.

Tanya (AI host): What’s a good way to compare plans side by side?

Billy Jordan: Start by gathering your household income info, recent tax returns, and a list of your doctors and prescriptions. Use HealthCare.gov to preview available plans. Filter by network type—HMO or EPO—and check the plan’s drug formulary. And if you’re working with a broker, ask which insurers they represent and double-check that you’re comparing the same plan details and subsidy eligibility.

Tanya (AI host): If I want to cancel my Marketplace plan, can I do that at any time?

Billy Jordan: Yes, you can request cancellation whenever you want. But here’s the key: double-check the effective date for when your coverage will actually end, and make sure your new plan starts right after. If you cancel too soon, and your new job benefits start the next month, you could have a gap with no insurance.

Tanya (AI host): So you can’t just assume it lines up perfectly?

Billy Jordan: Right. I had someone cancel as soon as they got a job offer, but their employer plan didn’t kick in until the first of the next month. That left them uninsured for a few weeks, which is risky if they’d had any medical emergencies during that time.

Tanya (AI host): If my income changes during the year, what’s the right way to report that so my premium tax credit stays accurate?

Billy Jordan: You should report income changes right away through your HealthCare.gov account or by contacting The Jordan Insurance Agency. The Marketplace will update your advance premium tax credits based on the new info. If you wait and your income ends up higher than you estimated, you might have to repay some of those credits when you file your taxes.

Tanya (AI host): What about mistakes with income reporting—what’s the most common issue there?

Billy Jordan: People often forget to include freelance income, seasonal bonuses, or investment distributions. That can really throw off your subsidy and lead to a surprise tax bill. Always count all sources of household income as the Marketplace defines it.

Tanya (AI host): Can you explain the difference between an HMO and an EPO plan in North Carolina?

Billy Jordan: Sure. An HMO usually requires you to stay in-network and may need referrals for specialists. An EPO also limits you to in-network care except for emergencies, but generally doesn’t need referrals. The big thing is, both types won’t pay for out-of-network care unless it’s a true emergency, so you need to check that your doctors and hospitals are in-network before you sign up.

Tanya (AI host): And if I want help comparing or enrolling in a plan, does it cost extra to work with someone like The Jordan Insurance Agency?

Billy Jordan: No extra cost at all. Working with a licensed broker like us costs you nothing extra—plan rates are the same whether you enroll on your own or with help. Just be sure to ask which insurers the broker represents, and always compare the same plan and household info when looking at prices.

Tanya (AI host): Three things to remember. One, you can only switch Marketplace health plans mid-year if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period—otherwise, wait for Open Enrollment starting November first. Two, always compare plans by total yearly costs, provider networks, and drug coverage—not just the monthly premium. Three, never cancel your old plan until your new coverage’s start date is confirmed to avoid a gap.
