Tanya (AI host): When should I buy a Medigap policy in South Carolina, and how does it actually work with Medicare? Stay tuned, because the timing here is more important than most people realize.

Tanya (AI host): Welcome to Smart Coverage. Real Advice., the insurance podcast from The Jordan Insurance Agency. I'm Tanya, your host, and I'm here with Billy Jordan, a licensed insurance agent and the president of The Jordan Insurance Agency.

Billy Jordan: A quick disclaimer: we're not affiliated with or endorsed by Medicare or any government agency, and this is general education, not advice for your situation. Now, let's get into it.

Tanya (AI host): So Billy, when is the right time to buy a Medigap policy if you're in South Carolina?

Billy Jordan: According to medicare.gov, your main window is called the Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This is a six-month period that starts the first month you have Medicare Part B and you're sixty-five or older. During these six months, you can buy any Medigap policy offered in South Carolina, and insurance companies can't turn you down or charge you more because of health problems.

Tanya (AI host): So, if I sign up for Medicare Part B at sixty-five, my six months start right then?

Billy Jordan: That's correct. The clock starts ticking as soon as both of those things are true: you have Medicare Part B, and you're at least sixty-five. That six-month window is when you can get a Medigap policy without worrying about your health history.

Tanya (AI host): What happens if I wait and try to buy a Medigap policy after those six months are up?

Billy Jordan: After your Open Enrollment Period ends, insurance companies can use medical underwriting, which means they can look at your health and even deny you coverage or charge you more. You might find fewer options, and it could cost more. It's not like the Medicare Open Enrollment every year—this Medigap window is a one-time thing.

Tanya (AI host): So, just to be clear, you only get this one six-month window?

Billy Jordan: That's right, Tanya. The Medigap Open Enrollment Period only happens once for most people. It doesn't come back every year. If you miss it, the rules change, and you could face higher prices or be turned down.

Tanya (AI host): What about people under sixty-five who have Medicare, maybe because of a disability or End-Stage Renal Disease? Can they buy a Medigap policy too?

Billy Jordan: According to medicare.gov, federal law generally doesn't require insurance companies to sell Medigap policies to people under sixty-five. So if you're under sixty-five in South Carolina and on Medicare because of a disability or ESRD, you might not be able to buy a Medigap policy until you turn sixty-five. You can check with the South Carolina Department of Insurance to see if there are any extra protections under state law.

Tanya (AI host): So, for most people, the rules kick in when they turn sixty-five and have Part B. But if you're younger and on Medicare, you might have to wait?

Billy Jordan: That's right. The special window usually starts at sixty-five with Part B. Before that, unless South Carolina has specific rules, you may not be able to buy a Medigap policy.

Tanya (AI host): Are there any situations where you can get a Medigap policy outside of that six-month Open Enrollment Period?

Billy Jordan: Yes, there are certain situations called “guaranteed issue rights” or “Medigap protections.” In those cases, insurance companies must sell you a policy, even outside your Open Enrollment Period. You can check with the South Carolina Department of Insurance to see if you qualify under state law.

Tanya (AI host): So, it's not impossible to get Medigap later, but it gets a lot harder unless you have those special protections?

Billy Jordan: Exactly. After your initial six-month window, you may have to pay more for a policy, have fewer policy options, or be denied a policy if you don’t meet medical underwriting requirements, unless you have guaranteed issue rights.

Tanya (AI host): Three things to remember. One, your Medigap Open Enrollment Period is a one-time, six-month window starting when you have Medicare Part B and are sixty-five or older. Two, during this time, you can buy any Medigap policy offered, no matter your health. Three, after this window, you may be denied coverage or pay more, unless you have special protections.
