Almost everyone who asks us about Alignment Health opens the same way, with a slightly apologetic admission that they have never heard of the company. That is a fair starting point and a useful one, because it puts the right question first. The question is not whether the name is famous. It is whether the company operates where you live.

Who is Alignment Health?

Alignment Health was founded in 2013 and is headquartered in Orange, California. It has been publicly traded on the Nasdaq exchange under the ticker ALHC since March 2021, which puts a company of that age in a fairly small group among Medicare carriers. It is a recent arrival in an industry where plenty of insurers measure their history in generations, and most people in the Carolinas have simply never had a reason to run into the name.

Is a newer or smaller Medicare carrier a riskier choice?

No, and we are not going to pretend otherwise to make a point. Size tells you how many people a company covers. It does not tell you how a particular plan will suit a particular person at a particular address. Every Medicare Advantage organization, large or small, contracts with the federal government and works inside the same rulebook, and if you want the plain-English version of how that arrangement works we keep one at what Medicare Advantage actually is.

What being newer does reliably mean is a narrower map. A company that started in 2013 is in fewer counties than one that has spent decades expanding, and that single fact reorders the whole conversation. With an established carrier, availability is usually assumed and the discussion moves straight to fit. With Alignment Health, availability is the first thing we check, not the last.

Is Alignment Health available where I live?

No honest page can answer that, including this one. Availability is decided county by county and we check it against your actual address, every time, because an answer that was right last autumn can be wrong this autumn.

Around Charlotte that matters more than people expect. Our clients routinely live on one side of the North Carolina and South Carolina line and run the rest of their lives on the other. Somebody with a Fort Mill mailing address who drives into Charlotte for work, church and every doctor they have seen in twenty years feels like a Charlotte resident in every respect that matters to them. For Medicare purposes they are a South Carolina resident, and that is the county we check. It is also why we ask for the address on the mail rather than the city you say you are from.

Does The Jordan Insurance Agency work with Alignment Health?

The Jordan Insurance Agency is an independent agency that works with Alignment Health. We are not an arm of the company and we are not its spokesman. An appointment is a working authorisation to quote and enrol, renewed with training and certification each year before the season opens, and it runs one way only. Nothing about it means Alignment Health has recommended us, and nothing about it obliges us to recommend Alignment Health.

The agency holds appointments with several Medicare organizations, which is the whole reason the independence is worth anything. If we only had one card to play, every hand would look the same.

Do you offer every Alignment Health plan?

We do not, and we would rather be the ones to say it. Some Medicare organizations we have no appointment with whatsoever. Within the ones we do work with, what we can present to you at your address is a subset of everything in existence. Treat any agent who claims to show you all of it with the suspicion that claim deserves.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.

If you would rather see the full list before speaking to anybody at all, Medicare.gov and 1-800-MEDICARE are there for exactly that, and we will not be offended.

Does enrolling through your agency change what I pay?

It does not. Premiums are filed with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, so the figure is the figure regardless of how you arrive at it, and the carrier pays the agent from its own side. You are not buying our time. That is also why we can afford to tell you when the answer is to leave your coverage alone, which we do more often than people expect. The longer answer lives at whether a Medicare broker costs more.

Some people reading this are not sure which road they are on yet. Medicare Advantage and a Medicare Supplement are built on different ideas, and the choice between them shapes everything afterwards, so we set them side by side at Medicare Advantage versus a Medicare Supplement.

What if Alignment Health stops serving my county?

Then you get a notice in the autumn and a window in which to act, and you are not stuck. Footprints move in both directions across the whole industry. Companies add counties, drop counties, and occasionally withdraw a plan entirely, and none of that is a judgement on the people enrolled in it.

The document that tells you is the annual notice of change, which we unpack at the annual notice of change. Keep it. Clients who bin it in September are the ones calling in a hurry in late November. We review our book every year regardless, so the call usually goes the other way around.

When can I switch, and what should I bring?

Medicare Annual Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, with anything you choose taking effect on January 1. There is a specific list of things that window lets you do, and we have written it out at what you can change during Annual Enrollment. If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment gives you a second and much narrower opportunity between January 1 and March 31.

Away from those dates you would need a special enrollment period, which depends on circumstances such as a move rather than on timing alone, and we go through the qualifying situations at Medicare special enrollment periods. Bring your Medicare card, your prescription list and the names of the doctors you refuse to give up. That last list does more work in these conversations than anything else you can hand us.

What is the next step?

Give the Charlotte office your address and let our licensed agents run the check properly. If Alignment Health is an option for you, we will say so. If it is not, we will say that instead, and we will not spend an hour explaining a company you cannot enrol in.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
