Medicare Advantage, sometimes called Part C, is another way to receive your Medicare-covered benefits. Rather than Original Medicare paying providers directly, a private plan administers your coverage.

The feature that draws most people

Every Medicare Advantage plan must set a yearly maximum out-of-pocket for in-network care. Original Medicare alone has no ceiling — you pay roughly 20% of each Part B service with no annual stop. For anyone managing an ongoing condition, that is usually the centre of the decision.

The feature that catches people out

These plans are generally built around a network. Whether the doctors you intend to keep participate is the first question, answered one name at a time — not assumed from the hospital system, and not assumed from last year, since networks change annually.

Why your county matters in Tennessee

Medicare Advantage availability can vary by county and ZIP code, and Tennessee is a long state. What is offered around Nashville is not automatically what is offered in East or West Tennessee, and a neighbouring county can present a different list. Advice written about the Nashville area is not advice about your address.

Tennessee households often use more than one health system, which makes the participation question sharper here than in places with a single dominant provider. Whether your particular doctors line up is the thing to settle first.

How to compare them properly

Premium is the least useful number. What decides fit is the total cost across a year, the out-of-pocket maximum, whether your specific doctors participate, how the drug list treats your prescriptions, and whether routine care requires prior authorisation. A cheaper premium with the wrong drug list is the more expensive plan.

We do not name plans or companies here, and we would not recommend one before seeing your doctor and prescription list.

If you also have TennCare

Tennessee has six Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans, all fully integrated with TennCare — a type of Medicare Advantage plan for people with both. See dual eligible in Tennessee.

Advantage or a Supplement

Unlike most states, Tennessee gives people under 65 broad access to Supplements too, so this is a genuine choice rather than a default. See how Medicare Supplements work in Tennessee.
