Long-term care insurance covers help with daily living. The useful way to think about it is by setting, because most policies pay across several and people often assume it only applies to nursing homes.
The settings usually covered
- Care in your own home. This is where most long-term care actually happens, and for many families it is the whole point of owning a policy — staying put.
- Adult day care. Daytime supervision and activities outside the home, often used to give a family caregiver relief.
- Assisted living. A residential setting with help available, short of skilled nursing.
- Nursing facility care. The setting people picture first, and generally the most expensive.
Many policies also pay toward care coordination, and some include respite care so a family caregiver can take a break without the arrangement collapsing.
What it does not cover
It does not pay for medical treatment. Doctor visits, hospital stays, surgery and prescriptions stay with your health plan or with Medicare. Long-term care insurance covers the help, not the medicine.
It also does not start paying simply because you have aged. Benefits are triggered by needing help with activities of daily living, or by cognitive impairment requiring supervision — usually two of six activities. See how long-term care insurance works for that mechanism.
The part worth reading closely
Coverage varies more between policies here than in most insurance. Whether home care is paid at the same rate as facility care, whether a family member can be paid as a caregiver, and how the benefit grows over time are all policy-specific. Two policies that look similar on price can behave very differently in a claim.
Why this matters next to Medicare
Medicare does not pay for ongoing custodial care. That gap is the reason this product exists, and it is the thing most North Carolina families learn too late. If you are already thinking about Medicare, this belongs in the same conversation rather than a later one.
