Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina is the state's oldest and widest-reaching health insurer, and for a great many North Carolinians it is simply the plan they have always had. It is one of five issuers offering Marketplace coverage in North Carolina for 2027.

That familiarity is worth something and it also causes a specific mistake: people renew into a Blue Cross plan year after year without checking whether the plan they are renewing into is still the plan they chose. Deductibles move. Networks change. The plan keeps the name.

Availability depends on your address

Marketplace plan availability is set at county level and it changes from year to year. A carrier can offer plans in your state, in your metro, and still not in your county — and the plan menu one town over can be different from yours. We check the current year against your actual address rather than your mailing address, which is not always the same county.

How The Jordan Insurance Agency fits in

The Jordan Insurance Agency is an independent agency that works with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. Independent means we are not employed by any carrier and we do not have a quota to fill for one. We compare what is actually available where you live and tell you what we would do in your position.

It also means we will tell you when Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina is not the right fit for your household, which is something a carrier's own sales line cannot do.

There is no cost for the conversation.

What does it cost to use us instead of enrolling yourself?

Nothing, and your premium is identical either way. Marketplace premiums are filed with regulators, so the price of a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina plan is the same whether you enrol through us, through HealthCare.gov, or directly with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. Carriers pay the agent. There is no service fee, no markup, and no version of the plan that costs more because an agent was involved. We go through this in more detail in does a health insurance broker cost more.

What changes is who you call. Enrol alone and your next conversation about the plan is with a call centre. Enrol through us and it is with the person who set the plan up — the difference is laid out in using an agent versus HealthCare.gov.

How it compares with the other options

For 2027, North Carolina Marketplace shoppers can also see plans from Oscar Health, UnitedHealthcare, Ambetter from Centene and AmeriHealth Caritas, depending on the county. Aetna and Cigna have both left the Marketplace and will not offer 2027 coverage.

We are not going to tell you Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina is the best plan, because that is not a thing anyone can say honestly without knowing your doctors, your prescriptions and your budget. The useful comparison is narrower: which of the plans available at your address covers the people you already see, carries the drugs you already take, and leaves you able to absorb the deductible if the year goes badly.

That is a half-hour conversation, not an afternoon of tabs.

What happens after you enrol

This is the part most people never think about in November, and the part that matters in March.

Renewal. Plans change every year — the premium, the deductible, sometimes the network. If you do nothing, you are usually re-enrolled automatically into whatever your plan became, which is not always the plan you chose — see does my Marketplace plan renew automatically. We look at the renewal notice with you before the window closes.

When something goes wrong. A claim processed oddly, a prescription rejected at the counter, a provider who says they are out of network when you were told otherwise. You can work through those alone. Most people would rather not.

When your life changes. Income, household, employment, address. Several of those affect what you qualify for, and some of them open a Special Enrollment Period you would not know to ask about.

When you can enrol

Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Choose a plan by December 15 and coverage starts January 1. Choose between December 16 and January 15 and it generally starts February 1. Outside that window you need a qualifying life event — losing other coverage, moving, marriage, a new baby — to open a Special Enrollment Period.

One caution worth repeating: a federal rule issued in 2025 would have closed this window on December 15, and a court order in June 2026 set that provision aside. A lot of articles still in circulation print the old date. January 15 is the operative deadline, and we set out the full timeline in when Open Enrollment runs for 2027. If you are reading this after December 15, you have not missed your chance.

What to do next

If you already know you want a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina plan, we can quote it and enrol you. If you are not sure, that is the more common starting point and the conversation is the same length. Bring your doctors, your prescriptions, and a realistic estimate of next year's household income — those three things decide most of it, and income is what drives how much help you qualify for.
