A client in her first Medicare year put it to us bluntly last October. She had been handed a name she did not recognise and wanted to know whether a company she had never heard of was allowed to run a Medicare plan at all. It is a good question and it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance.

Who is Devoted Health, and why have I not heard of the name?

Devoted Health is a Medicare Advantage organization that operates in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, among other states. It is not one of the household names and has not spent decades buying advertising in this market, which is most of the explanation for why it is unfamiliar.

There is a small coincidence we notice internally. The three states Devoted Health works in are the three states The Jordan Insurance Agency works in. Our offices sit in Charlotte and Nashville, and the ground between them is where most of these conversations happen.

Does a newer carrier play by different rules?

It does not, and this is the part worth holding on to. Every Medicare Advantage organization, whether it enrolled its first member last year or a generation ago, holds a contract with the federal government and is bound by the same requirements: the same annual filing, the same oversight from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the same enrollment calendar, and the same marketing rules that govern what an agent may say to you, including the paragraph further down this page.

So newer does not mean unsupervised, and it does not mean experimental. If you want the structure underneath all of it in ordinary language, we keep an explanation at how Medicare Advantage works. What newer does mean is that the company's map is still being drawn, which brings us to the question that actually affects you.

Where does Devoted Health operate, and is that changing?

It is changing, and in this instance the direction is outward. For 2027 the company is expanding into 342 new counties and five new states, those being Connecticut, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey and New York, which takes it to roughly 1,341 counties across 34 states.

Read that carefully, because the wrong meaning is easy to take. North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee are not on the list of new states, since the company already works in all three. Growth in New Jersey tells you nothing about your own county. A company can expand nationally while its map in your corner of the world stays as it was. That is why the only availability answer we give is the one checked against your address on the day you ask.

Does The Jordan Insurance Agency work with Devoted Health?

The Jordan Insurance Agency is an independent agency that works with Devoted Health. That means our licensed agents can quote their plans, enrol you, and sit with you afterwards when something needs sorting out. It also means we complete Devoted Health's training and certification each year before we are permitted to discuss their plans with anybody.

What it does not mean is that the company has endorsed this agency, or that we are speaking for it when we explain something. We hold appointments with several Medicare organizations, so our agents are not trying to make one company fit you. If you are weighing up who to work with in the first place, we set out what to ask at how to pick a Medicare agent.

Do you offer every Devoted Health plan?

No. The agency does not hold an appointment with every Medicare organization out there, and even where we do hold one, what we are able to offer at a given address is less than the sum of what exists. We would rather you knew that before you sat down with us than afterwards.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.

We point people to those numbers without hesitation. An agent who is nervous about you seeing the full list is telling you something about himself.

What does the agency charge me?

Nothing at all. Premiums are filed with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services before a plan is ever sold, and the filed figure does not change according to how you enrol. Carriers pay agents from their own side of that arrangement, so the help is already paid for whether you use it or not.

Why do you check availability again every single year?

Because the answer genuinely moves. County service areas are set a year at a time across this industry, and a plan that served your county this year may not next year. When that happens you receive an annual notice of change in the autumn, and that envelope is the one document we ask every client to keep. We take it apart at the annual notice of change.

Tennessee makes the point more sharply than anywhere. Middle Tennessee is a quilt of counties and the line between two of them can run through a neighbourhood. Clients who moved twenty minutes to be near a grandchild have found their county moved with them. That is a routine fix raised early and an unpleasant surprise raised late, which is why our Nashville office re-runs the check every autumn rather than waiting to be asked.

When can I enrol, and what if I spend part of the year elsewhere?

Medicare Annual Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, for coverage beginning January 1, and the detail of how that window works is at the Annual Enrollment Period. If you already hold a Medicare Advantage plan there is also Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment, January 1 through March 31, which is narrower and only open to people already in one of those plans.

Mention travel early rather than late. People who winter in Florida, spend summers with family out of state, or keep a second address somewhere should raise it in the first conversation, because it shapes which questions we ask next. We cover the general ground at Medicare coverage when you travel. Outside the two main windows, a mid-year change usually turns on a qualifying event, and whether you can change your plan then depends on the particulars.

What is the first step?

Tell us your address and what you are trying to protect. Our licensed agents will check what is really on offer where you live, explain where Devoted Health does and does not fit, and leave the decision with you. If the right move is to keep what you have, that is what we will tell you.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
