Independent agency · Charlotte, NC
The questions that actually matter, from an agency that will happily be measured against them. Here is how to tell whether an agent works for you or for one company — and what to ask before you trust them with your home and auto.

The first question
The single most useful question when choosing an insurance agent is simple: do you represent one company, or several? A captive agent sells one brand; an independent agent shops many for you. Both can be good at the job, but only one can compare your options. The Jordan Insurance Agency is an independent agency in Charlotte writing home, auto and umbrella through Liberty Mutual, Travelers, National General and Chubb, so comparing is what we do — and we are glad to be judged on the questions below.
✕A single insurance company
A captive agent or a direct site can only offer their own company’s policies. If the price jumps or the fit is wrong, that is your problem to untangle, one company at a time.

We compare your coverage across Liberty Mutual, Travelers, National General and Chubb, with Progressive and Geico available too, and place it with whichever one actually fits — at no cost to you.
Who this page is for
An independent agent compares several companies. A captive agent can only offer one. Ask which you are talking to.
Where to start →A good agent reads the policy back to you and tells you what you actually own, not just the price.
Where to start →A straight answer about commission is a good sign. It should not cost you a fee, and it should not bias the advice.
Where to start →The value shows up at renewal and claim time. Ask who you call then — a person, or a queue.
Where to start →A local agent knows the market, the weather risk, and shows up as a real person.
Where to start →An agent who will say your current policy is fine, when it is, is an agent you can trust when it is not.
Where to start →The short version
Choosing an insurance agent comes down to three things. First, can they actually compare your options, or are they limited to one company’s shelf. Second, will they explain what you are buying and why, in plain English, rather than just quoting a number. Third, will they still be your contact next year, at renewal and at claim time. An agent who does all three is worth far more than a slightly lower quote from someone you will never speak to again.
The decisions, one at a time
The questions to ask and what a good answer sounds like.
This is the first and most important question. A captive agent represents a single insurance company and can only sell that brand. An independent agent represents many companies and shops among them for you.
Neither is dishonest, but only an independent agent can put your options side by side. If comparing matters to you — and it should — ask this first.
A price with no explanation is not advice. A good agent reads your declarations page with you, tells you what your limits would actually do in a claim, and points out gaps — before you buy.
If an agent cannot or will not explain what you are buying, that is the answer to whether you should trust them with it.
A trustworthy agent will answer this plainly. For home and auto, you typically do not pay the agent a fee — the insurance company pays a commission that is already built into the premium, the same premium you would pay going direct.
What you want to hear is that the commission is roughly comparable across their companies, so it does not bias which one they recommend.
The real test of an agent comes at renewal and at claim time. Ask who you will actually reach then: the same person who knows your policy, or a different call-center agent every time.
An agent who stays your point of contact is a large part of what you are paying for.
A local agent knows the North Carolina market and the regional risk, and can meet you in person if you want. It also means there is a real name and a real office behind the policy.
It is harder to be given the runaround by someone who lives and works where you do.
Maybe the best sign of a good agent is one who will look at your current policy and tell you it is already fine — when it is. An agent who only ever ends in a sale is running a sales script.
The ones worth keeping are the ones who are honest when there is no sale in it, because that is how you know they are honest when there is.

Why work with us
Call in and our intake specialist — trained on home and auto — answers right away and gets your quote started. There’s no callback queue to sit through before anyone looks at your situation.
We write Home, Auto and Umbrella coverage through Liberty Mutual, Travelers, National General and Chubb, plus Progressive and Geico. With that many companies to compare, your best fit isn’t decided before we even start.
If your current policy is priced fairly and protects you properly, we’ll say so. A second opinion that always ends in a sale isn’t really a second opinion.

Charlotte service area
The Jordan Insurance Agency writes Home, Auto and Umbrella coverage across Charlotte and all of Mecklenburg County. Because rates and availability change from one address to the next, we quote you based on where you actually live — not on the city as a whole.
Three ways to do this
Call in and you’ll be connected with our intake specialist, who is trained on home and auto. In about fifteen minutes, they take down your home, your vehicles and drivers, your current coverage, and whether an umbrella policy makes sense.
Would you rather schedule it? Pick an open slot on our calendar — Monday through Friday, 9 to 5 — and our intake specialist will call you then. It’s the same person and the same conversation, just at a time that suits you.
Once we’ve quoted it across our companies, a licensed agent walks you through what each option covers and what we’d recommend in your position.
Our office is on Toringdon Way in South Charlotte. We work with Charlotte-area clients by phone, by video, and in person by appointment.

“Billy has been taking care of my family insurance for 3 years now. It is always painless, professional and makes my family feel cared for. Another agency was going to charge me HUNDREDS more. Grateful I trusted my instincts.”
“Mr. Jordan patiently walked me through the entire process. The option I chose will save me $200 per month in my premium and it is a better policy than I had previously. I highly recommend Billy Jordan.”
“Outstanding customer service with super fast response time. Billy has helped me with landlord, renters, auto, and health. When my health carrier pulled out, he notified me a month in advance and found me a new plan. Highly recommend.”

Good to know
Ask three things: can they compare several companies or just one; will they explain what you are buying in plain English; and will they still be your contact at renewal and claim time. An independent agent who compares, explains and stays is worth more than a slightly cheaper quote from someone you will never reach again.
A captive agent represents one insurance company and sells only that brand. An independent agent represents many companies and shops among them for you. Both are licensed; only the independent agent can compare your options side by side. The Jordan Insurance Agency is independent.
Do you represent one company or several? Will you explain my coverage and point out gaps? How are you paid? Who do I call at renewal and at claim time? Would you ever tell me to keep my current policy? The answers tell you quickly whether the agent works for you or for one company.
For home and auto you typically do not pay the agent a fee. The insurance company pays our agency a commission already built into the premium — the same premium you would pay buying direct. A good agent will tell you this plainly, and the commission should be comparable across their companies so it does not bias the advice.
It helps. A local agent knows the market and the regional risk, can meet you in person, and is a real name and office behind your policy rather than a call center. It is one more reason you get a person, not a queue, when something goes wrong.
Call us or book a time online. An intake specialist takes your details, we compare your home and auto across several companies, and a licensed agent walks you through the options. No cost, and no obligation to change anything.
No. A slightly lower quote from someone you will never reach again is worth less than an agent who compares your options, explains your coverage, and stays your contact at renewal and claim time. Price matters, but it is one of several things a good agent gets right.
