Why the help matters

Gaston County is not a Charlotte suburb, and Medicare knows it

Medicare rules are federal and identical everywhere: the same seven-month window around your 65th birthday, the same Part B penalty that stays with you once it attaches. What is local is what you can actually choose, because Medicare Advantage and Part D are arranged county by county. Gastonia sits in Gaston County, west of the Catawba, with a hospital system of its own. Advice written for Mecklenburg residents describes a different set of options and a different care landscape from the one outside your door.

A national call center

One script, one shelf

A large call center may route you to a different agent each time, so your doctors, your prescriptions and your history start over with every call.

The Jordan Insurance Agency

Licensed, local, and independent

A licensed agent who learns your situation, checks it against the doctors and prescriptions you already have, and is still here next year when something changes.

What makes Gastonia its own market

Your county and your hospital system are both different from Charlotte’s

Two things separate Gastonia from the markets east of the river. The first is the county: Medicare Advantage and Part D availability is set county by county, so Gaston County residents choose from Gaston’s list rather than Mecklenburg’s. The second is the care itself. CaroMont Regional Medical Center has anchored this county since 1946 and is a 476-bed hospital with a Level III trauma centre — an independent system, not a branch of the Charlotte networks. Taken together, that means guidance written for Charlotte can be wrong for you twice over.

The decisions, one at a time

What we actually walk you through

There is no single “best” path through Medicare. What fits depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, how much you travel, and what you want your costs to look like. Here is how we work through each piece.

Turning 65

Your Initial Enrollment Period generally runs seven months — the three months before your birthday month, your birthday month, and the three after. Two things catch people out. Enrollment is not always automatic: if you’re receiving Social Security benefits at least four months before you turn 65, Medicare generally enrolls you in Part A and Part B for you, and otherwise you usually have to act. And waiting until the birthday month itself can push your start date later than you expected.

Come with the doctors you intend to keep, your prescriptions with doses, and whether you or your spouse are still working. More on timing in our guide to when you can enroll in Medicare.

Retiring, or still working past 65

Whether you can delay Part B without a late-enrollment penalty depends on your specific situation, including whether you have group health coverage based on your own or your spouse’s current employment. Employer size can also affect how Medicare coordinates with that coverage, so we check the details before you decide rather than working from a rule of thumb.

When you retire, losing that coverage generally opens a Special Enrollment Period, and it does not stay open indefinitely. The cleanest handoffs are planned a month or two before your last day. Our write-up on working past 65 in North Carolina covers how the two fit together.

Medicare Part B timing

Three questions come up constantly: when should Part B start, can I delay it while I’m working, and what happens the month employer coverage ends. We push people to ask early because the Part B late enrollment penalty, once it attaches, generally stays with you for as long as you have Part B. It is not a one-time fee, and it does not care which county you live in.

Background: the late enrollment penalty and how Medicare works alongside employer coverage.

Part D prescription drug coverage

Drug coverage is its own decision with its own timing. Going without creditable prescription drug coverage after you are first eligible can bring a late-enrollment penalty of its own, which is why “I don’t take anything right now” is not quite the whole answer.

Part D is arranged county by county like Advantage, so this is another place where the Gaston County distinction shows up. Bring the actual prescription list, names and doses. Here is how Part D works.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

A supplement works alongside Original Medicare and helps with costs Original Medicare leaves behind. In North Carolina, Medigap plans are standardized by letter, so the basic benefits for a given plan letter are the same from one insurer to the next. Premiums, underwriting, discounts and company service can still differ — which is where the comparison actually happens.

Worth knowing in a county with one dominant system: because a supplement works alongside Original Medicare rather than through a network, it is less sensitive to which system your doctors belong to. For someone who uses CaroMont here but occasionally sees a specialist in Charlotte, that is a real consideration rather than a recommendation. There is also a health-questions issue if you move to a supplement outside your one-time open window. Background: what a Medicare Supplement is.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage is another way to receive your Medicare-covered benefits, usually built around a network. The plan has to be offered in Gaston County, and the doctors you want to keep have to participate — verified one physician at a time.

In Gastonia that conversation usually begins with CaroMont, the independent system that has served this county since 1946 from its 476-bed medical centre on Court Drive. Because CaroMont is not part of the Charlotte networks, assumptions carried over from Mecklenburg do not hold here. If you also see a specialist across the river, mention it early — that split is exactly what needs confirming before anything is signed. Neither Advantage nor a Supplement is automatically the right answer.

Good to know

Gastonia Medicare questions, answered

Yes. We work with Medicare clients throughout Gastonia and Gaston County. We don’t maintain an office in Gastonia — our licensed agents handle it by phone, by video, and in person at our Charlotte office on Toringdon Way if you would rather come across.

Yes. Medicare Advantage and Part D availability is set county by county, so Gaston County residents choose from Gaston’s list rather than Mecklenburg’s. It is the reason Charlotte-written guidance can describe options that are not on your list at all.

It depends on the specific option, and it is verified one physician at a time rather than assumed. CaroMont is an independent system rather than part of the Charlotte networks, so this is worth confirming rather than carrying over an assumption. Bring the doctors you want to keep and we will check before anything is signed.

It is worth raising early. A network that covers one system will not automatically cover another, and crossing the river means crossing between systems. Tell us both and we will check participation on each.

Yes, and it is one of the more frequent reasons people here call us. Losing employer coverage generally opens a Special Enrollment Period with its own clock. Reach out a month or two before your last day rather than after it.

They’re structured differently. A Supplement works alongside Original Medicare and helps with costs it leaves behind. Medicare Advantage is another way to receive your Medicare-covered benefits, usually through a network. Neither is universally better — the right fit depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, your travel, and how you want your costs to feel.

Nothing. Our guidance and our help at enrollment are free to you, and you will not pay more for having a licensed agent in your corner.
