Serving Lake Wylie, SC · York County
Turning 65, retiring, or reviewing coverage you already have? Lake Wylie sits in South Carolina, but the lake puts the North Carolina line right at your door, and plenty of neighbours keep doctors across the water. That works — but you are on a York County plan list and under South Carolina rules now. The Jordan Insurance Agency sorts the two out.

Why the help matters
Lake Wylie is one of those places where the map and the mailbox do not fully agree. You live in York County, South Carolina, but the lake wraps you right up against the North Carolina line, and plenty of households keep doctors across the water in Gaston County or up in Charlotte. Two things quietly follow from that. Your Medicare Advantage and Part D list is York County’s, not Mecklenburg’s or Gaston’s. And Medigap is regulated at state level, so South Carolina’s rules apply to you — regardless of which state your physicians practise in. Neither depends on where you get your care, which is why we start from your actual address and your actual doctors.
A national call center
A large call center may route you to a different agent each time, so your doctors, your prescriptions and your history start over with every call.
The Jordan Insurance Agency
A licensed agent who learns your situation, checks it against the doctors and prescriptions you already have, and is still here next year when something changes.
Who this page is for
Common on this shore. Your York County list and your South Carolina Medigap rules hold no matter which side of the water your physicians are on.

Where to start →A lot of Lake Wylie households did. Whether that works under a given plan is a question worth settling early, not assuming.
Where to start →Leaving employer coverage starts a clock, and it is shorter than most people expect.
Where to start →Whether you can delay Part B safely turns on details most people are never told. Worth confirming before you assume.

Lake Wylie is an unincorporated community — a census area rather than an incorporated town — on a peninsula along the west and north shore of the lake, sharing the Clover post office and the 29710 ZIP. There is no town hall, but the county and state lines are firm: you are in York County, South Carolina. That puts you on the same plan list as Clover, Tega Cay, Fort Mill and Rock Hill, and under South Carolina’s Medigap rules rather than North Carolina’s. What makes this shore its own case is how close the other state is. Belmont and Gastonia sit directly across the water in Gaston County, North Carolina; CaroMont opened a hospital in Belmont that reaches into York County, while Piedmont Medical Center runs hospitals in Rock Hill and, since 2022, Fort Mill on the South Carolina side. Whether your own physicians participate in a given plan is still checked one at a time.
The decisions, one at a time
There is no single “best” path through Medicare. What fits depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, how much you travel, and what you want your costs to look like. Here is how we work through each piece.
Your Initial Enrollment Period generally runs seven months — the three months before your birthday month, your birthday month, and the three after. Two things catch people out. Enrollment is not always automatic: if you’re receiving Social Security benefits at least four months before you turn 65, Medicare generally enrolls you in Part A and Part B for you, and otherwise you usually have to act. And waiting until the birthday month itself can push your start date later than you expected.
Come with the doctors you intend to keep, your prescriptions with doses, and whether you or your spouse are still working. Around Lake Wylie that first item carries extra weight, because a household’s doctors are often split between the two states. More on timing in our guide to when you can enroll in Medicare.
Whether you can delay Part B without a late-enrollment penalty depends on your specific situation, including whether you have group health coverage based on your own or your spouse’s current employment. Employer size can also affect how Medicare coordinates with that coverage, so we check the details before you decide.
Plenty of people here retired from a Charlotte or Gastonia employer while living on the South Carolina side of the lake. Where the employer sits does not change the federal rules. When you do retire, losing that coverage generally opens a Special Enrollment Period, and it does not stay open indefinitely — plan it a month or two before your last day. Our write-up on working past 65 covers how the two fit together.
Three questions come up constantly: when should Part B start, can I delay it while I’m working, and what happens the month employer coverage ends. We push people to ask early because the Part B late enrollment penalty, once it attaches, generally stays with you for as long as you have Part B. It is not a one-time fee, and it does not care which state you live in.
Background: the late enrollment penalty and how Medicare works alongside employer coverage.
Drug coverage is its own decision with its own timing. Going without creditable prescription drug coverage after you are first eligible can bring a late-enrollment penalty of its own, which is why “I don’t take anything right now” is not quite the whole answer.
Part D is arranged county by county, so York County’s list applies to you even when you fill a prescription across the water in North Carolina. Bring the actual list, names and doses. Here is how Part D works.
A supplement works alongside Original Medicare and helps with costs Original Medicare leaves behind. In South Carolina, Medigap plans are standardized by letter, so the basic benefits for a given plan letter are the same from one insurer to the next. Premiums, underwriting, discounts and company service can still differ — which is where the comparison actually happens.
This is the piece that surprises people who assume the lake is just Charlotte’s backyard, because Medigap is regulated at state level and South Carolina’s rules apply to you here. It is also the structure that copes best with care split across a state line, since a supplement works alongside Original Medicare rather than through a network — and on this shore, a doctor on the York County side and a doctor across the water in Gaston County are a common pairing. That is a genuine consideration, not a recommendation. There is also a health-questions issue if you move to a supplement outside your one-time open window. Background: what a Medicare Supplement is.
Medicare Advantage is another way to receive your Medicare-covered benefits, usually built around a network. The plan has to be offered in York County, and the doctors you want to keep have to participate — verified one physician at a time, never assumed from a brochure.
In Lake Wylie that check does more work than usual, because care here reaches in a few directions at once. Piedmont Medical Center runs hospitals in Rock Hill and, since 2022, in Fort Mill on the South Carolina side; CaroMont opened a hospital in Belmont, just across the water in Gaston County, that also serves York County; and some households still drive into Charlotte for specialists they have used for years. All of that is workable. What is not workable is assuming a network stretches across the lake or the state line because the drive looks short. Neither Advantage nor a Supplement is automatically right.

Clover, Tega Cay, Fort Mill and Rock Hill share York County with you and therefore share your plan list. We verify from your actual address.

Good to know
Yes. We are licensed in South Carolina as well as North Carolina and work with Medicare clients throughout Lake Wylie and York County. We don’t maintain an office in Lake Wylie — our licensed agents handle it by phone, by video, and in person at our Charlotte office on Toringdon Way.
The ones for where the address physically sits, which is York County, South Carolina. Being an unincorporated community with a Clover post office and a 29710 ZIP does not change that. Your Medicare Advantage and Part D list is York County’s, and Medigap follows South Carolina’s rules. We confirm from the address itself rather than the postmark.
It often does, but it is a check rather than an assumption. Living in York County sets which plans are available to you; whether a given plan includes your North Carolina physicians is verified one doctor at a time. With a Supplement the network question largely falls away, which is one reason it comes up on this shore — but it is a trade-off we weigh with you, not a blanket answer.
Broadly yes, since all three are in York County. The nearby exception is Indian Land, which sits in Lancaster County even though much of it carries Fort Mill mailing addresses, so it can be on a different list. We confirm from the address rather than the mailing town.
Care reaches in a few directions. Piedmont Medical Center has a hospital in Rock Hill and opened one in Fort Mill in 2022 on the South Carolina side, and CaroMont opened a hospital in Belmont, just across the water in Gaston County, that also serves York County. Which of them your own doctors are affiliated with is the part we check individually before anything is signed.
They’re structured differently. A Supplement works alongside Original Medicare and helps with costs it leaves behind. Medicare Advantage is another way to receive your Medicare-covered benefits, usually through a network. Neither is universally better — the right fit depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, your travel, and how you want your costs to feel.
Nothing. Our guidance and our help at enrollment are free to you, and you will not pay more for having a licensed agent in your corner.
