Serving Tega Cay, SC · York County
Turning 65, retiring, or reviewing coverage you already have? Plenty of Tega Cay households moved down from Charlotte and kept their doctors there. That works — but you are now under South Carolina rules and a York County plan list. The Jordan Insurance Agency untangles the two.

Why the help matters
Two separate things change when you cross the state line, and people usually discover only one of them. Medicare Advantage and Part D availability is set county by county, so your list is York County’s rather than Mecklenburg’s. Medigap is regulated at state level, so South Carolina’s rules apply to you, not North Carolina’s. Neither of those depends on where your doctors are, which is why a household that kept its Charlotte physicians can still be looking at a completely different set of options than it was before the move.
A national call center
A large call center may route you to a different agent each time, so your doctors, your prescriptions and your history start over with every call.
The Jordan Insurance Agency
A licensed agent who learns your situation, checks it against the doctors and prescriptions you already have, and is still here next year when something changes.
Who this page is for
Common here. Your county list and your Medigap rules both changed with the state line, even if your doctors did not.
Where to start →Your window opens three months before your birthday month. We’ll show you what has to happen inside it and what can wait.
Where to start →That is workable. It just means the network side has to be checked rather than assumed.
Where to start →Whether you can delay Part B safely turns on details most people are never told. Worth confirming before you assume.
Where to start →Coverage changes from year to year, and so do your prescriptions and your doctors. An annual look costs you nothing.
Where to start →Adult children handle a lot of these calls. With your parent’s permission you’re welcome to sit in and ask the questions.
Where to start →Where Tega Cay sits
Tega Cay is a planned city on a peninsula along Lake Wylie in York County, South Carolina, just west of Fort Mill, north of Rock Hill and about twenty miles south of Charlotte. That puts you on the same county list as Fort Mill and Rock Hill, and under South Carolina’s Medigap rules rather than North Carolina’s. Care has also moved closer in recent years: Piedmont Medical Center opened a hospital in Fort Mill in 2022, alongside its longer-standing hospital in Rock Hill, so the drive north into Charlotte is no longer the default it once was. Whether your own physicians participate is still checked one at a time.
The decisions, one at a time
There is no single “best” path through Medicare. What fits depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, how much you travel, and what you want your costs to look like. Here is how we work through each piece.
Your Initial Enrollment Period generally runs seven months — the three months before your birthday month, your birthday month, and the three after. Two things catch people out. Enrollment is not always automatic: if you’re receiving Social Security benefits at least four months before you turn 65, Medicare generally enrolls you in Part A and Part B for you, and otherwise you usually have to act. And waiting until the birthday month itself can push your start date later than you expected.
Come with the doctors you intend to keep, your prescriptions with doses, and whether you or your spouse are still working. More on timing in our guide to when you can enroll in Medicare.
Whether you can delay Part B without a late-enrollment penalty depends on your specific situation, including whether you have group health coverage based on your own or your spouse’s current employment. Employer size can also affect how Medicare coordinates with that coverage, so we check the details before you decide.
Some people here retire from a Charlotte employer while living in South Carolina. Where the employer sits does not change the federal rules. When you do retire, losing that coverage generally opens a Special Enrollment Period, and it does not stay open indefinitely — plan it a month or two before your last day. Our write-up on working past 65 covers how the two fit together.
Three questions come up constantly: when should Part B start, can I delay it while I’m working, and what happens the month employer coverage ends. We push people to ask early because the Part B late enrollment penalty, once it attaches, generally stays with you for as long as you have Part B. It is not a one-time fee, and it does not care which state you live in.
Background: the late enrollment penalty and how Medicare works alongside employer coverage.
Drug coverage is its own decision with its own timing. Going without creditable prescription drug coverage after you are first eligible can bring a late-enrollment penalty of its own, which is why “I don’t take anything right now” is not quite the whole answer.
Part D is arranged county by county, so York County’s list applies to you even if you fill prescriptions on a trip north. Bring the actual list, names and doses. Here is how Part D works.
A supplement works alongside Original Medicare and helps with costs Original Medicare leaves behind. In South Carolina, Medigap plans are standardized by letter, so the basic benefits for a given plan letter are the same from one insurer to the next. Premiums, underwriting, discounts and company service can still differ — which is where the comparison actually happens.
This is the part that surprises people who moved down from North Carolina, because Medigap is regulated at state level and South Carolina’s rules now apply to you. It is also the structure that copes best with care split across a state line, since a supplement works alongside Original Medicare rather than through a network. That is a genuine consideration here, not a recommendation. There is also a health-questions issue if you move to a supplement outside your one-time open window. Background: what a Medicare Supplement is.
Medicare Advantage is another way to receive your Medicare-covered benefits, usually built around a network. The plan has to be offered in York County, and the doctors you want to keep have to participate — verified one physician at a time, never assumed from a brochure.
In Tega Cay that check matters more than usual, because a household’s doctors are often in two states at once. Some care has shifted locally since Piedmont Medical Center opened its Fort Mill hospital in 2022; some people still drive north to specialists they have used for years. Both are workable. What is not workable is assuming a network reaches across the line because the drive is short. Neither Advantage nor a Supplement is automatically right.

Why work with us
A York County list, South Carolina Medigap rules, and doctors who may still be in North Carolina. All three get checked.
A person with a name and a direct number. The same person next year, when your prescriptions or your doctors have changed.
Two decades of doing this for families across the Charlotte region, and a 4.9-star rating across 169 Google reviews.
Enrollment is the easy part. The value shows up in March when a pharmacy says something unexpected and you need a real person.
Tega Cay service area
The Jordan Insurance Agency helps Medicare clients throughout Tega Cay and York County, South Carolina. Fort Mill and Rock Hill share York County with you and therefore share your plan list. Indian Land, just east, is Lancaster County and sits on a different one; cross the line north into Mecklenburg and both the list and the Medigap rules change again. We verify from your actual address.
Three ways to do this
Straightforward and quick. One call, your doctor and prescription list in front of you, and we work through it together.
Useful when an adult child wants to sit in from out of town. We can share a screen and walk through the comparison as we go.

Good to know
Yes. We are licensed in South Carolina as well as North Carolina and work with Medicare clients throughout Tega Cay and York County. We don’t maintain an office in Tega Cay — our licensed agents handle it by phone, by video, and in person at our Charlotte office on Toringdon Way.
It often does, but two things changed with the move regardless of your doctors. Your Medicare Advantage and Part D list is now York County’s, and Medigap is regulated at state level so South Carolina’s rules apply to you. Whether your North Carolina physicians participate in a given plan is a separate check we run one doctor at a time.
Broadly yes, since both are in York County. Indian Land is the nearby exception, because it sits in Lancaster County even though much of it carries Fort Mill mailing addresses. We confirm from the address rather than the postmark.
No. Medicare does not require you to change physicians when you cross a state line. What it does mean is that the network side needs verifying rather than assuming, because a plan sold in York County will not automatically include a practice in Mecklenburg.
Piedmont Medical Center opened a hospital in Fort Mill in 2022, and its longer-standing hospital is in Rock Hill. Which of them your own doctors are affiliated with is the part we check individually before anything is signed.
They’re structured differently. A Supplement works alongside Original Medicare and helps with costs it leaves behind. Medicare Advantage is another way to receive your Medicare-covered benefits, usually through a network. Neither is universally better — the right fit depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, your travel, and how you want your costs to feel.
Nothing. Our guidance and our help at enrollment are free to you, and you will not pay more for having a licensed agent in your corner.
