Why independent matters

We shop the Health Insurance market for you — not for one company

A single-company agent can only show you that company’s plans. We are independent, so we compare what is actually offered in Gaston County, check your own doctors and prescriptions against the plan you are considering, and stay with you when something changes mid-year. Belmont is a market where the care picture genuinely changed, and a plan is only as good as what it reaches today.

A single-company agent

One company’s plans

Sells only their own brand’s policies. When your income changes, a plan is discontinued, or your doctor leaves a network, untangling it is your problem.

The Jordan Insurance Agency

The whole market

We compare the plans actually offered in your county, check your own doctors and prescriptions against the plan you are considering, and re-shop it when your situation changes.

The Belmont part

The town had no hospital. Since January 2025 it has one.

CaroMont Regional Medical Center–Belmont opened on January 8, 2025 — a 54-bed full-service hospital with a 24-hour emergency department and operating rooms, on a site next to Belmont Abbey College. It is the first full-service hospital for Belmont, Mount Holly and eastern Gaston County, which for a long time had none. That matters for insurance in a very practical way: any plan chosen before 2025 was chosen for a town where serious care meant a drive, and the question of what your plan reaches locally simply did not arise. It arises now. The second thing worth knowing is about price rather than care: Gaston County is Rating Area 5, not Charlotte’s Area 4, so Belmont is genuinely priced on a different band from Mecklenburg despite being close to it.

The situations, one at a time

The decisions, one at a time

The general rules first, then how they land for someone living in Gaston County. Nothing here is a quote and nothing promises an outcome.

Self-employed and 1099 coverage in Belmont

If you work for yourself and need to buy your own health coverage, the ACA Marketplace is one of the main places to shop — alongside a spouse’s plan, COBRA from a previous employer, or an off-Marketplace individual plan. Any premium tax credit is based on your estimated household income for the coverage year rather than on a salary an employer reports.

What is specific to Belmont is not the process but the price band underneath it: your plan is rated on Gaston County, which is a different area from Mecklenburg. Start with how self-employed coverage works, then the specifics for 1099 contractors or consultants.

You lost employer coverage

Losing job-based coverage is a qualifying life event, which opens a Special Enrollment Period rather than leaving you waiting for the next Open Enrollment. The window runs 60 days before and 60 days after the date coverage ends, not only afterward. Enroll before the loss and the new plan can begin the first day of the month after your coverage stops, closing the gap entirely.

Plenty of Belmont households work in Charlotte and live in Gaston County. Your Marketplace follows where you live, so the replacement plan is built on Gaston — a different rating area from the one your employer plan may have been priced around. More on coverage between jobs, and if the window has closed, what is still available.

COBRA or a Marketplace plan

Neither is automatically better. COBRA continues the exact plan you already have, which matters if you are mid-treatment, have met most of your deductible this year, or want no disruption. A Marketplace plan starts fresh, and a premium tax credit may or may not apply depending on your household income.

One rule catches people out, so it is worth stating plainly: voluntarily dropping COBRA before it runs out does not open a Special Enrollment Period. COBRA actually ending — running out, or a former employer stopping its contribution — generally does. Which of those applies decides whether you can move now or must wait, so check before cancelling anything. See what COBRA is, then how the two compare.

Retiring in Belmont before 65

Retiring at 60 through 64 means covering yourself until Medicare eligibility at 65. Individual and Marketplace coverage is one option to weigh against COBRA and a spouse’s employer plan. Premium tax credits are keyed to your estimated household income for the coverage year — not to your assets, and not to last year’s salary — so a year with a modest drawdown and a year with a large distribution can produce very different answers.

Retiring in Belmont is a materially different proposition than it was a few years ago, because emergency and inpatient care are now in town rather than a drive away. That is worth factoring in honestly — and worth checking against the specific plan, since having a hospital nearby and having a plan that reaches it are two different things. Start with coverage before Medicare; when 65 is close, our Medicare guidance picks it up.

Turning 26 in Belmont

When your coverage ends depends on the kind of plan your parent has, and the two answers genuinely differ. On a parent’s Marketplace plan you can generally stay covered through December 31 of the year you turn 26, whatever month your birthday falls in. On a parent’s job-based plan, coverage often ends the last day of the month you turn 26 — but employer plans vary, so confirm the exact date with the employer or the plan.

Aging off is a qualifying life event and the Special Enrollment Period runs 60 days before and 60 days after the loss, so you can enroll ahead of the date and start with no gap. Details on getting your own coverage at 26.

Timing and cost

When you can enroll, and what it costs

Two things decide whether you can act today or have to wait, and how much help you get when you do.

Special Enrollment Periods

Outside Open Enrollment you need a qualifying life event to enroll or change plans. The common ones are losing other coverage, moving, marriage, and having or adopting a child. For a loss of coverage the window is 60 days before and 60 days after; most other events give you 60 days from the event itself.

A hospital opening in your town is not one of them, which is worth saying plainly here. It is an excellent reason to re-check your plan at the next Open Enrollment; it is not a mid-year escape hatch. A permanent move may open a Special Enrollment Period — but the Marketplace generally requires that you had qualifying health coverage for at least one day in the 60 days before the move, with limited exceptions. More on qualifying life events and their deadlines.

Open Enrollment dates

For 2027 coverage, Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Two dates matter rather than one: to have coverage begin January 1 you generally need to enroll by December 15, 2026, and enrolling between December 16 and January 15 usually means a February 1 start.

In Belmont this is the moment to look again rather than renew on autopilot, because the local care picture changed after many households last chose a plan. Doing nothing usually rolls you into a plan for the following year, but that plan can change its cost, its network and its drug list. See the enrollment dates and what each one means.

What it costs in Gaston County

Where you live decides two separate things. On rating, North Carolina sets the geographic premium band by county across sixteen areas, and Gaston is Area 5 while Mecklenburg is Area 4 — so Belmont genuinely sits on a different band from Charlotte, unlike most of the towns that ring the city. On availability, which insurers are permitted to sell individual plans is filed by county too, and that is a separate question from the price band.

Premium tax credits are then based on your estimated household income for the coverage year and the plan prices those facts produce. Because the credit is built on an estimate, it is reconciled on your tax return, so a mid-year income change is worth reporting when it happens. The enhanced credits that applied through 2025 expired at the end of that year and have not been renewed, so the income limits are tighter than they were. Read how premium tax credits are calculated, or check where your household sits with our federal poverty level reference.

Doctors, hospitals and networks

Having a hospital in town and having a plan that reaches it are two different things

The first is now true in Belmont. The second still has to be checked, plan by plan.

CaroMont Regional Medical Center–Belmont opened on January 8, 2025 with 54 beds, a 24-hour emergency department and operating rooms, giving Belmont, Mount Holly and eastern Gaston County their first full-service hospital. Before that, anything serious meant leaving town.

The insurance consequence is easy to state and easy to miss. A hospital being nearby does not automatically mean your plan works there, and a plan chosen in the years when Belmont had no hospital was never evaluated on that question at all. So for a lot of households here the honest advice is not “switch” — it is “look again, once, deliberately.” Some will find their existing plan already works well. Others will find the local option is the one thing their plan does not reach.

Whether a given plan reaches it is not something anyone can promise you in advance, and it is exactly the claim that goes stale between plan years. What we do instead is concrete: before you enroll, we take the actual doctors and facilities you use and check them against the specific plan you are considering. If they are not there, we say so and look at what else Gaston County offers.

Good to know

Belmont Health Insurance questions

CaroMont Regional Medical Center–Belmont opened on January 8, 2025. It is a 54-bed full-service hospital with a 24-hour emergency department and operating rooms, and it is the first full-service hospital serving Belmont, Mount Holly and eastern Gaston County. Before it opened, anything beyond routine care meant leaving town.

Not automatically — but it is a good reason to look once, deliberately, rather than renewing on autopilot. A plan chosen before 2025 was chosen for a Belmont with no hospital, so the question of what it reaches locally was never part of that decision. Some households will find their existing plan works fine with the new facility; others will find it is the one thing the plan does not reach. Either way it is worth knowing before you need it.

No, and this is one of the few places near Charlotte where the county line genuinely moves the price band. North Carolina sets geographic premium rating by county across sixteen areas: Gaston County is Rating Area 5, while Mecklenburg is Area 4. So a Belmont household is rated differently from a Charlotte one a few miles east, which is the opposite of what happens in Union or Cabarrus.

Generally no. A facility opening near you, or a wish to use one your plan does not reach, is not one of the qualifying life events that opens a Special Enrollment Period. The realistic route is to note it and treat the next Open Enrollment as the point to compare properly. If something else has happened — a job loss, a move, a marriage, a birth — that may open a window on its own terms.

Gaston. Your Marketplace and your rating follow where you live, not where you work, so a Belmont address is rated on Gaston County in Area 5 regardless of an employer across the river. If you lose that employer plan, the replacement you shop for is built on Gaston too.

For 2027 coverage, Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. To have coverage start on January 1 you generally need to enroll by December 15, 2026. Enrolling between December 16 and January 15 usually means a February 1 start date.
