Why independent matters

We shop the Health Insurance market for you — not for one company

A single-company agent can only show you that company’s plans. We are independent, so we compare what is actually offered in Cabarrus County, check your own doctors and prescriptions against the plan you are considering, and stay with you when something changes mid-year. In a county served by one hospital system, that provider check is not a formality — it is the decision.

A single-company agent

One company’s plans

Sells only their own brand’s policies. When your income changes, a plan is discontinued, or your doctor leaves a network, untangling it is your problem.

The Concord part

One hospital system in the county — and that is not changing soon

Concord is in Cabarrus County, which catches people out because so much of daily life here points at Charlotte. On price, the surprise is that it does not matter: Cabarrus is Rating Area 4, the same as Mecklenburg, so crossing that county line does not move your geographic rating at all. What does matter is care. Atrium Health Cabarrus on Church Street North is the county’s hospital, and it has been the only one for a long time. That is changing eventually — state regulators have conditionally approved a new 50-bed Novant Health hospital on Trinity Church Road, and a 76-bed expansion at Atrium — but those are targeted around 2030 and 2031. For every plan year between now and then, Concord is a one-system county. Choose a plan on that basis, not on the announcement.

The situations, one at a time

The decisions, one at a time

The general rules first, then how they land for someone living in Cabarrus County. Nothing here is a quote and nothing promises an outcome.

Self-employed and 1099 coverage in Concord

If you work for yourself and need to buy your own health coverage, the ACA Marketplace is one of the main places to shop — alongside a spouse’s plan, COBRA from a previous employer, or an off-Marketplace individual plan. Any premium tax credit is based on your estimated household income for the coverage year rather than on a salary an employer reports.

Concord carries a lot of independent trades and motorsports work, where income arrives unevenly and the estimate is genuinely hard to make. It is worth the time, because that number decides both the size of the credit and what you owe back at tax time. Start with how self-employed coverage works, then the specifics for 1099 contractors or consultants.

You lost employer coverage

Losing job-based coverage is a qualifying life event, which opens a Special Enrollment Period rather than leaving you waiting for the next Open Enrollment. The window runs 60 days before and 60 days after the date coverage ends, not only afterward. Enroll before the loss and the new plan can begin the first day of the month after your coverage stops, closing the gap entirely.

One thing to check on the way through: an employer plan and an individual plan do not necessarily reach the same hospital system, and in this county there is effectively one to reach. If your family has been using the hospital on Church Street, confirm that before you choose rather than after. More on coverage between jobs, and if the window has closed, what is still available.

COBRA or a Marketplace plan

Neither is automatically better. COBRA continues the exact plan you already have, which matters if you are mid-treatment, have met most of your deductible this year, or want no disruption. A Marketplace plan starts fresh, and a premium tax credit may or may not apply depending on your household income.

One rule catches people out, so it is worth stating plainly: voluntarily dropping COBRA before it runs out does not open a Special Enrollment Period. COBRA actually ending — running out, or a former employer stopping its contribution — generally does. Which of those applies decides whether you can move now or must wait, so check before cancelling anything. See what COBRA is, then how the two compare.

Retiring in Concord before 65

Retiring at 60 through 64 means covering yourself until Medicare eligibility at 65. Individual and Marketplace coverage is one option to weigh against COBRA and a spouse’s employer plan. Premium tax credits are keyed to your estimated household income for the coverage year — not to your assets, and not to last year’s salary — so a year with a modest drawdown and a year with a large distribution can produce very different answers.

The retirement years are when the provider question sharpens, because that is when most households start using specialists in earnest. In a one-system county it is worth settling early whether the plan you intend to hold until 65 reaches the care you intend to use. Start with coverage before Medicare; when 65 is close, our Medicare guidance picks it up.

Turning 26 in Concord

When your coverage ends depends on the kind of plan your parent has, and the two answers genuinely differ. On a parent’s Marketplace plan you can generally stay covered through December 31 of the year you turn 26, whatever month your birthday falls in. On a parent’s job-based plan, coverage often ends the last day of the month you turn 26 — but employer plans vary, so confirm the exact date with the employer or the plan.

Aging off is a qualifying life event and the Special Enrollment Period runs 60 days before and 60 days after the loss, so you can enroll ahead of the date and start with no gap. Details on getting your own coverage at 26.

Timing and cost

When you can enroll, and what it costs

Two things decide whether you can act today or have to wait, and how much help you get when you do.

Special Enrollment Periods

Outside Open Enrollment you need a qualifying life event to enroll or change plans. The common ones are losing other coverage, moving, marriage, and having or adopting a child. For a loss of coverage the window is 60 days before and 60 days after; most other events give you 60 days from the event itself.

Worth knowing what is not on that list: a plan failing to reach the hospital you want is not a qualifying life event, and neither is a practice changing systems. Those are Open Enrollment problems, which is why the network check belongs before you commit rather than after. A permanent move may open a Special Enrollment Period — but the Marketplace generally requires that you had qualifying health coverage for at least one day in the 60 days before the move, with limited exceptions. More on qualifying life events and their deadlines.

Open Enrollment dates

For 2027 coverage, Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Two dates matter rather than one: to have coverage begin January 1 you generally need to enroll by December 15, 2026, and enrolling between December 16 and January 15 usually means a February 1 start.

In Concord the network page of the renewal notice is the one that repays reading. Doing nothing usually rolls you into a plan for the following year, but that plan can change its cost, its network and its drug list. See the enrollment dates and what each one means.

What it costs in Cabarrus County

Where you live decides two separate things, and in Concord they give different answers. On rating, North Carolina sets the geographic premium band by county across sixteen areas, and Cabarrus sits in Area 4 alongside Mecklenburg, Union, Rowan, Anson and Stanly — so being in Cabarrus rather than Mecklenburg does not move it. On availability, which insurers are permitted to sell individual plans is also filed by county, and that can differ even between counties sharing a rating area. We check both rather than assuming the county line is either meaningless or decisive.

Premium tax credits are then based on your estimated household income for the coverage year and the plan prices those facts produce. Because the credit is built on an estimate, it is reconciled on your tax return, so a mid-year income change is worth reporting when it happens. The enhanced credits that applied through 2025 expired at the end of that year and have not been renewed, so the income limits are tighter than they were. Read how premium tax credits are calculated, or check where your household sits with our federal poverty level reference.

Why work with us

What you get from The Jordan Insurance Agency

We check the network first here

In a one-system county, that is the question that decides whether a plan works for your family.

We will not invent a difference

Cabarrus and Mecklenburg share a rating area. If the county line does not change your price, we say so.

No cost to you

You pay the same premium you would pay going direct. The help and the ongoing service are included.

A real person next year

The same agency when your income changes, a plan is discontinued, or a claim goes sideways.

Doctors, hospitals and networks

A second hospital system is approved for Concord. Do not plan this year around it.

Cabarrus County is served by one hospital system today, and the announcements about that changing are about the next decade, not the next plan year.

Atrium Health Cabarrus on Church Street North is the hospital in Concord, and for practical purposes it has been the county’s hospital on its own. State regulators have conditionally approved a new 50-bed Novant Health hospital on Trinity Church Road and a 76-bed expansion at Atrium, but those projects are targeted for roughly 2030 and 2031. Approved is not open.

That timeline is the reason this page leads with networks rather than price. In a county with two competing systems, a plan that misses one still leaves you a full alternative nearby. In Cabarrus today, a plan that does not reach the county’s hospital sends you across a county line for anything beyond routine care — which is workable for some households and a real problem for others, depending on where your specialists already are.

Whether a given plan reaches the hospital or the physicians you use is not something anyone can promise you in advance, and it is exactly the claim that goes stale between plan years. What we do instead is concrete: before you enroll, we take the actual doctors and facilities you use and check them against the specific plan you are considering. If they are not there, we say so and look at what else Cabarrus County offers.

Good to know

Concord Health Insurance questions

No. Concord is in Cabarrus County, which surprises people because so much of daily life here points toward Charlotte. For health insurance the practical news is reassuring on price: North Carolina sets geographic premium rating by county, and Cabarrus is in Rating Area 4 alongside Mecklenburg, Union, Rowan, Anson and Stanly. So being in Cabarrus rather than Mecklenburg does not move your rating area. What it does change is which county’s insurer list applies to you and, more importantly here, which hospital system is realistically available.

No. State regulators have conditionally approved a new 50-bed Novant Health hospital on Trinity Church Road in Concord and a 76-bed expansion at Atrium Health Cabarrus, but those projects are targeted for roughly 2030 and 2031. Approved is not open. Every plan year between now and then should be chosen on the care that actually exists in Cabarrus County today, which is effectively one hospital system.

Because it removes your fallback. In a county with two competing systems, a plan that misses one still leaves a full alternative a short drive away. In Cabarrus, a plan that does not reach the county’s hospital sends you across a county line for anything beyond routine care. That is perfectly workable for some households, particularly if their specialists are already in Charlotte, and a genuine problem for others. It is a decision worth making deliberately rather than discovering in an emergency.

Atrium Health Cabarrus on Church Street North is the hospital in Concord and has effectively served as the county’s hospital. We do not make general claims about which plans reach it, because network arrangements change between plan years. Before you enroll, we take the actual providers and facilities you use and check them against the specific plan you are considering.

Where you live decides your Marketplace and your rating, so the plan is built on Cabarrus County. Where your doctor is decides whether a particular plan is usable for you. Those are two separate questions and both have to be answered, which is why we ask for your address and your provider list in the same conversation rather than one at a time.

For 2027 coverage, Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. To have coverage start on January 1 you generally need to enroll by December 15, 2026. Enrolling between December 16 and January 15 usually means a February 1 start date.
