Serving Davidson, NC · Mecklenburg & Iredell counties
Davidson is one town sitting in two counties — and those two counties are priced in two different rating areas. Licensed agents who start by checking which side of that line your address is on.

Why independent matters
A single-company agent can only show you that company’s plans. We are independent, so we check which county your address is actually in, compare what is offered there, check your own doctors and prescriptions against the plan you are considering, and stay with you when something changes mid-year. In a town split across a rating-area line, starting from the right side of it is not a detail — it is the whole basis of the quote.
A single-company agent
Sells only their own brand’s policies. When your income changes, a plan is discontinued, or your doctor leaves a network, untangling it is your problem.
The Jordan Insurance Agency
We compare the plans actually offered in your county, check your own doctors and prescriptions against the plan you are considering, and re-shop it when your situation changes.
Who this page is for
Most people find this page because something changed. In Davidson, a good number find it because they moved a few streets and discovered their number changed too.
Consultants, contractors, real estate professionals and small business owners buying their own coverage.
Where to start →A layoff, a job change, a resignation, or a spouse’s plan ending. A clock starts the day coverage stops.
Where to start →You have an election letter and a deadline and want an honest comparison first.
Where to start →Covering the years between your last day of work and Medicare eligibility.
Where to start →Coming off a parent’s plan and needing your own coverage without a gap.
Where to start →A short move around here can cross a county line, and that line does more than change your mailing address.
Where to start →The Davidson part
Davidson’s town limits cross the Mecklenburg / Iredell county line, and in North Carolina that particular line does something most county lines around Charlotte do not: it changes your rating area. North Carolina sets geographic premium rating by county across sixteen areas. Mecklenburg is Area 4. Iredell is Area 2. Two Davidson households on the same errand run can therefore be priced in different areas, and ZIP 28036 is no help at all — it touches four counties. This is genuinely unusual: for most of our neighbours, crossing into Union, Cabarrus or Rowan does not move the rating factor, because those counties sit in Area 4 alongside Mecklenburg. Davidson is the exception, which is why the first thing we do here is confirm the county of record for your address rather than assuming it from the town name.
The situations, one at a time
The general rules first, then how they land for someone living in Davidson. Nothing here is a quote and nothing promises an outcome.
If you work for yourself and need to buy your own health coverage, the ACA Marketplace is one of the main places to shop — alongside a spouse’s plan, COBRA from a previous employer, or an off-Marketplace individual plan. Any premium tax credit is based on your estimated household income for the coverage year rather than on a salary an employer reports.
The Davidson wrinkle is that the plan menu and the price band both follow your county of record, so a self-employed household here should settle that question before comparing anything. Start with how self-employed coverage works, then the specifics for 1099 contractors or consultants.
Losing job-based coverage is a qualifying life event, which opens a Special Enrollment Period rather than leaving you waiting for the next Open Enrollment. The window runs 60 days before and 60 days after the date coverage ends, not only afterward. Enroll before the loss and the new plan can begin the first day of the month after your coverage stops, closing the gap entirely.
Davidson sends a lot of people south into Charlotte for work, which means the employer plan and the home address often sit in different counties. Your Marketplace follows where you live. More on coverage between jobs, and if the window has closed, what is still available.
Neither is automatically better. COBRA continues the exact plan you already have, which matters if you are mid-treatment, have met most of your deductible this year, or want no disruption. A Marketplace plan starts fresh, and a premium tax credit may or may not apply depending on your household income.
One rule catches people out, so it is worth stating plainly: voluntarily dropping COBRA before it runs out does not open a Special Enrollment Period. COBRA actually ending — running out, or a former employer stopping its contribution — generally does. Which of those applies decides whether you can move now or must wait, so check before cancelling anything. See what COBRA is, then how the two compare.
Retiring at 60 through 64 means covering yourself until Medicare eligibility at 65. Individual and Marketplace coverage is one option to weigh against COBRA and a spouse’s employer plan. Premium tax credits are keyed to your estimated household income for the coverage year — not to your assets, and not to last year’s salary — so a year with a modest drawdown and a year with a large distribution can produce very different answers.
If a move is part of the retirement plan — downsizing within the Lake Norman towns is common enough — be aware that a short move here can change your county, and with it your rating area and your plan menu. Worth checking before you sign anything. Start with coverage before Medicare; when 65 is close, our Medicare guidance picks it up.
When your coverage ends depends on the kind of plan your parent has, and the two answers genuinely differ. On a parent’s Marketplace plan you can generally stay covered through December 31 of the year you turn 26, whatever month your birthday falls in. On a parent’s job-based plan, coverage often ends the last day of the month you turn 26 — but employer plans vary, so confirm the exact date with the employer or the plan.
Aging off is a qualifying life event and the Special Enrollment Period runs 60 days before and 60 days after the loss, so you can enroll ahead of the date and start with no gap. If you are living at your parents’ address in Davidson, the county on that address is what your own plan will be built on. Details on getting your own coverage at 26.
Timing and cost
Two things decide whether you can act today or have to wait, and how much help you get when you do.
Outside Open Enrollment you need a qualifying life event to enroll or change plans. The common ones are losing other coverage, moving, marriage, and having or adopting a child. For a loss of coverage the window is 60 days before and 60 days after; most other events give you 60 days from the event itself.
Moving deserves particular attention in this town. A permanent move to a new county or ZIP may open a Special Enrollment Period — but the Marketplace generally requires that you had qualifying health coverage for at least one day in the 60 days before the move, with limited exceptions, so a move after a long gap may not qualify on its own. And because a Davidson move can cross the Mecklenburg / Iredell line without leaving town, it is worth checking whether a move you thought was trivial actually changed your county. More on qualifying life events and their deadlines.
For 2027 coverage, Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Two dates matter rather than one: to have coverage begin January 1 you generally need to enroll by December 15, 2026, and enrolling between December 16 and January 15 usually means a February 1 start.
Renewal deserves a calendar reminder. Doing nothing usually rolls you into a plan for the following year, but that plan can change its cost, its network and its drug list. See the enrollment dates and what each one means.
Where you live decides two separate things, and in Davidson it is worth keeping them apart. One is rating — North Carolina sets the geographic premium band by county across sixteen areas, and Mecklenburg is Area 4 while Iredell is Area 2. The other is availability — which insurers are permitted to sell individual plans in your county at all. They are filed separately and they can move independently, so a neighbour’s answer is not automatically yours.
Premium tax credits are then based on your estimated household income for the coverage year and the plan prices those two facts produce. Because the credit is built on an estimate, it is reconciled on your tax return, so a mid-year income change is worth reporting when it happens. The enhanced credits that applied through 2025 expired at the end of that year and have not been renewed, so the income limits are tighter than they were. Read how premium tax credits are calculated, or check where your household sits with our federal poverty level reference.

Why work with us
In a town split across a rating-area line, that is where an honest quote has to start.
We compare the plans actually offered where you live instead of one company’s shelf.
You pay the same premium you would pay going direct. The help and the ongoing service are included.
The same agency when your income changes, a plan is discontinued, or a claim goes sideways.
Doctors, hospitals and networks
Davidson’s care options are all somewhere else, and “somewhere else” here means different counties in different directions.
There is no hospital inside Davidson’s town limits. Households here use facilities in the neighbouring Lake Norman towns and in Charlotte, which means the practical question is not whether care is nearby — it is which direction you already go, and whether the plan you are about to buy works in that direction.
That is more consequential in Davidson than in most places, because the town straddles a county line and the nearest options lie on either side of it. A household that habitually drives south has a different set of considerations from one that habitually drives north, even though both have a Davidson address.
Whether a given plan reaches the providers you actually use is not something anyone can promise you in advance, and it is exactly the claim that goes stale between plan years. What we do instead is concrete: before you enroll, we take the actual doctors and facilities you use and check them against the specific plan you are considering. If they are not there, we say so and look at what else is available where you live.

Real client experiences
Verified Google reviews of The Jordan Insurance Agency. Individual experiences vary, and these are agency-wide rather than specific to any one situation.
“My experience with Billy was perfect. My husband passed away and I needed individual insurance by year’s end. Billy helped me find the best insurance for my situation — and it’s affordable. Caring, listening, knowledgeable, and professional.”
“Billy has been taking care of my family insurance for 3 years now. It is always painless, professional and makes my family feel cared for. Another agency was going to charge me HUNDREDS more. Grateful I trusted my instincts.”
“Outstanding customer service with super fast response time. Billy has helped me with landlord, renters, auto, and health. When my health carrier pulled out, he notified me a month in advance and found me a new plan. Highly recommend.”

Good to know
Both, depending on the address. Davidson’s town limits cross the Mecklenburg / Iredell county line, so two homes in the same town can have different counties of record. That matters for health insurance because North Carolina sets geographic premium rating by county: Mecklenburg is Rating Area 4 and Iredell is Rating Area 2. ZIP 28036 will not settle it for you either, because that ZIP touches four counties. We confirm the county on your actual address before quoting anything.
No, and that is the part most people get backwards. Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus, Rowan, Anson and Stanly all sit in the same Rating Area 4, so moving between most of those counties does not move the geographic rating factor at all. Davidson is unusual precisely because the line running through it separates Area 4 from Area 2. Gaston County is a third case again, in Area 5. The county matters, but not always in the direction people expect.
Davidson, North Carolina — the Lake Norman town north of Charlotte, split between Mecklenburg and Iredell counties. It is a different place from Davidson County, North Carolina, which is roughly 70 miles away around Lexington and Thomasville and sits in an entirely different rating area. If you live in Davidson County rather than the town of Davidson, the county figures on this page do not describe your situation.
Not inside the town limits. Households here use facilities in the neighbouring Lake Norman towns and in Charlotte, and because Davidson straddles a county line, the nearest options sit on either side of it. The useful thing to sort out before enrolling is which direction you actually travel for care, then whether the plan you are considering works in that direction. We check your specific providers against the specific plan rather than making a general claim.
Possibly, and it is worth thirty seconds to check. A move within the town can cross the Mecklenburg / Iredell line, which changes your county of record, your rating area and potentially which insurers are available to you. A permanent move may also open a Special Enrollment Period, though the Marketplace generally requires that you had qualifying health coverage for at least one day in the 60 days before the move, with limited exceptions. Either way, report the address change rather than assuming nothing turns on it.
For 2027 coverage, Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. To have coverage start on January 1 you generally need to enroll by December 15, 2026. Enrolling between December 16 and January 15 usually means a February 1 start date.
