Why independent matters

We shop the Health Insurance market for you — not for one company

A single-company agent can only show you that company’s plans. We are independent, so we compare what is actually offered at your address, check your own doctors and prescriptions against the plan you are considering, and stay with you when something changes mid-year. That mattered in 2026: three insurers left the North Carolina Marketplace, taking the statewide count from nine to six, and people whose plan was discontinued were defaulted into a different network than the one they had picked.

A single-company agent

One company’s plans

Sells only their own brand’s policies. When your income changes, a plan is discontinued, or your doctor leaves a network, untangling it is your problem.

The Jordan Insurance Agency

The whole market

We compare the plans actually offered in your county, check your own doctors and prescriptions against the plan you are considering, and re-shop it when your situation changes.

The Matthews part

A Matthews address can be in two different counties — here is what that does and does not change

Matthews is one of the few places where your mailing address genuinely misleads you about your county. ZIP 28104 addresses written “Matthews, NC” are largely in Union County, while 28105 is Mecklenburg. That split really does scramble school assignment and tax jurisdiction, so people arrive expecting it to scramble their health insurance too. For ACA coverage the honest answer is the more useful one: Mecklenburg and Union are both in North Carolina’s Rating Area 4, so crossing that line does not change the geographic rating factor the way most people assume. What it can change is which insurers are actually offering plans at your address, because service areas are filed county by county — so we check the real address rather than the town name on the envelope.

The situations, one at a time

The decisions, one at a time

The general rules first, then how they land for someone with a Matthews address. Nothing here is a quote and nothing promises an outcome.

Self-employed and 1099 coverage in Matthews

If you work for yourself and need to buy your own health coverage, the ACA Marketplace is one of the main places to shop — alongside a spouse’s plan, COBRA from a previous employer, or an off-Marketplace individual plan. Any premium tax credit is based on your estimated household income for the coverage year rather than on a salary an employer reports. That is the piece people most often get wrong: it is an estimate you make up front, it is reconciled on your tax return, and a strong quarter or a slow one is worth reporting when it happens rather than at filing time.

The self-employed health insurance deduction sits on top of that and interacts with any credit you claim, so the two are worth looking at together rather than separately. Start with how self-employed coverage works in North Carolina, or go to the specifics if you are a real estate professional or an LLC owner.

You lost employer coverage

Losing job-based coverage is a qualifying life event, which opens a Special Enrollment Period rather than leaving you to wait for the next Open Enrollment. The timing detail worth knowing is that the window runs 60 days before and 60 days after the date coverage ends, not only afterward. Enroll before the loss and the new plan can begin the first day of the month after your coverage stops, closing the gap entirely.

A gap costs more than a nervous month. It restarts your deductible and can change which providers you are able to use mid-treatment. If your last day is already on the calendar, that is the moment to call. More on coverage between jobs, and if the window has already closed, what is still available.

COBRA or a Marketplace plan

Neither is automatically better. COBRA continues the exact plan you already have, which matters if you are mid-treatment, have met most of your deductible this year, or want no disruption at all. A Marketplace plan starts fresh, and a premium tax credit may or may not apply depending on your household income. The honest comparison is cost after any credit, provider access, prescriptions, the deductible you have already satisfied, and timing.

One rule catches people out, so it is worth stating plainly: voluntarily dropping COBRA before it runs out does not open a Special Enrollment Period. COBRA actually ending — running out, or a former employer stopping its contribution — generally does. You can also switch during Open Enrollment either way. Which of those applies decides whether you can move now or must wait, so check before you cancel anything. See what COBRA is, then how the two compare.

Retiring in Matthews before 65

Retiring at 60 through 64 means covering yourself until Medicare eligibility at 65. Individual and Marketplace coverage is one option to weigh against COBRA and a spouse’s employer plan. What makes a retirement year different is that premium tax credits are keyed to your estimated household income for the coverage year — not to your assets, and not to last year’s salary. A year with a modest drawdown and a year with a large distribution can produce very different answers, which is why this is worth modelling before you set a date.

We handle the Medicare handoff too, so the bridge years and the transition at 65 are one conversation instead of two agencies. Start with coverage before Medicare; when 65 is close, our Medicare guidance picks it up.

Turning 26 in Matthews

When your coverage ends depends on the kind of plan your parent has, and the two answers genuinely differ. On a parent’s Marketplace plan you can generally stay covered through December 31 of the year you turn 26, whatever month your birthday falls in. On a parent’s job-based plan, coverage often ends the last day of the month you turn 26 — but employer plans vary, so confirm the exact date with the employer or the plan rather than assuming.

Getting the date right is what matters, because aging off is a qualifying life event and the Special Enrollment Period runs 60 days before and 60 days after the loss. That lets you enroll ahead of the date and start with no gap. The usual trap is assuming a new employer’s plan begins on day one — many carry a waiting period of a month or more. Details on getting your own coverage at 26.

Timing and cost

When you can enroll, and what it costs

Two things decide whether you can act today or have to wait, and how much help you get when you do.

Special Enrollment Periods

Outside Open Enrollment you need a qualifying life event to enroll or change plans. The common ones are losing other coverage, moving, marriage, and having or adopting a child. For a loss of coverage the window is 60 days before and 60 days after; most other events give you 60 days from the event itself. Documentation is usually required and is far easier to produce at the time.

Moving matters more than usual around Matthews, because a short move can put you in a different county without changing your mailing city. A permanent move to a new county or ZIP may open a Special Enrollment Period — but the Marketplace generally requires that you had qualifying health coverage for at least one day in the 60 days before the move, with limited exceptions, so a move after a long gap may not qualify on its own. More on qualifying life events and their deadlines.

Open Enrollment dates

For 2027 coverage, Open Enrollment on HealthCare.gov runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Two dates matter rather than one: to have coverage begin January 1 you generally need to enroll by December 15, 2026, and enrolling between December 16 and January 15 usually means a February 1 start. If you need to be covered on the first of the year, December 15 is the real deadline.

Renewal deserves a calendar reminder too. Doing nothing usually rolls you into a plan for the following year, but that plan can change its cost, its network and its drug list, and the help you qualify for moves with your income. See the enrollment dates and what each one means.

What it costs, and what changed

Premium tax credits are based on your estimated household income for the coverage year and the plan prices where you live. Because the credit is built on an estimate, it is reconciled on your tax return, so a mid-year income change is worth reporting when it happens. We can tell you what you actually qualify for; we will not guess at it on a web page.

Two things changed recently. The enhanced premium tax credits that applied through 2025 expired at the end of that year and have not been renewed, so the income limits are tighter than households got used to. And the North Carolina Department of Insurance approved an average individual rate increase of about 28.6% for 2026. If your income is at the lower end, Medicaid rather than a Marketplace plan may be the answer, since North Carolina expanded Medicaid in December 2023. Check where your household falls with our federal poverty level reference, or read how the credits are calculated.

Why work with us

What you get from The Jordan Insurance Agency

Independent, not captive

We compare the plans actually offered at your address instead of one company’s shelf.

No cost to you

You pay the same premium you would pay going direct. The help and the ongoing service are included.

A real person next year

The same agency when your income changes, a plan is discontinued, or a claim goes sideways.

Health and Medicare together

The bridge years before 65 and the handoff at 65 are one conversation, not two agencies.

Doctors, hospitals and networks

Two hospitals, two systems, and one of them has a Matthews address in another county

Matthews is unusually well served for a town its size, and the geography of that service is worth understanding before you pick a plan.

Novant Health Matthews Medical Center sits inside the town. Atrium Health Union West carries a Matthews 28104 mailing address but is physically in Stallings, in Union County. So a Matthews household often has two hospitals from two competing systems close at hand — and one of them is not, strictly speaking, in Matthews at all.

That matters because a plan’s network can treat those two systems very differently. Being near both facilities is not the same as being covered at both. It is a genuine choice rather than a formality, and it is the kind of thing worth settling before you enroll rather than at the point of care.

Plans differ in which hospitals and physician groups they contract with, and those contracts can change from one plan year to the next. We will not tell you on a web page that a particular plan includes a particular hospital or doctor — nobody can promise that in advance, and it is exactly the claim that goes stale. What we do is check your actual doctors, your hospital and your prescriptions against the specific plan you are considering, before you enroll rather than after.

Matthews Health Insurance questions

It changes less than people expect, and it is worth knowing exactly what. ZIP 28104 addresses written as Matthews are largely in Union County, while 28105 is Mecklenburg. Yes. We are an independent agency and we help Matthews individuals and families compare the ACA Marketplace plans actually offered at their address, apply any premium tax credit they qualify for, and check their own doctors and prescriptions against the plan before enrolling. There is no cost to you for that help.

Then bring your doctors and prescriptions so we can check them against the plans available at your address. The self-employed health insurance deduction interacts with the credit, so the two are worth looking at together.
