Serving Waxhaw, NC · Union County
The county line south of Charlotte changes less than people think. The state line three miles away changes almost everything. Licensed agents who know which one you are actually near.

Why independent matters
A single-company agent can only show you that company’s plans. We are independent, so we compare what is actually offered in Union County, check your own doctors and prescriptions against the plan you are considering, and stay with you when something changes mid-year. Waxhaw is the closest market to our office, and it is also the one where people most often assume a boundary matters when it does not — or miss the one that does.
A single-company agent
Sells only their own brand’s policies. When your income changes, a plan is discontinued, or your doctor leaves a network, untangling it is your problem.
The Jordan Insurance Agency
We compare the plans actually offered in your county, check your own doctors and prescriptions against the plan you are considering, and re-shop it when your situation changes.
Who this page is for
Most people find this page because something changed. In Waxhaw, a fair number find it while deciding whether to buy on this side of the state line or the other.
Consultants, contractors, real estate professionals and small business owners buying their own coverage.

Most people here assume that living in Union County rather than Mecklenburg puts them in a different price band. It does not. North Carolina sets geographic premium rating by county across sixteen areas, and Union sits in Area 4 alongside Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Rowan, Anson and Stanly — so moving between Waxhaw and Charlotte does not move the geographic rating factor at all. The boundary that genuinely matters in Waxhaw is the one about three miles away. Cross into South Carolina and you change your Marketplace, your rating area, the list of insurers permitted to sell to you, and your Medicaid eligibility rules, because all of those are set per state rather than per county. South Carolina has not expanded Medicaid; North Carolina did, in December 2023. That is a real difference in what a household qualifies for, and it turns on which side of a line you sleep on.
The situations, one at a time
The general rules first, then how they land for someone living in Union County. Nothing here is a quote and nothing promises an outcome.
If you work for yourself and need to buy your own health coverage, the ACA Marketplace is one of the main places to shop — alongside a spouse’s plan, COBRA from a previous employer, or an off-Marketplace individual plan. Any premium tax credit is based on your estimated household income for the coverage year rather than on a salary an employer reports.
Where you work does not decide your Marketplace — where you live does. That is worth saying plainly in a town where a good number of people run businesses that operate in both Carolinas. Start with how self-employed coverage works, then the specifics for 1099 contractors or consultants.
Losing job-based coverage is a qualifying life event, which opens a Special Enrollment Period rather than leaving you waiting for the next Open Enrollment. The window runs 60 days before and 60 days after the date coverage ends, not only afterward. Enroll before the loss and the new plan can begin the first day of the month after your coverage stops, closing the gap entirely.
Waxhaw commutes in every direction — into Charlotte, into Monroe, and south across the line. The replacement plan is built on where you live, which for this page means Union County, North Carolina. More on coverage between jobs, and if the window has closed, what is still available.
Neither is automatically better. COBRA continues the exact plan you already have, which matters if you are mid-treatment, have met most of your deductible this year, or want no disruption. A Marketplace plan starts fresh, and a premium tax credit may or may not apply depending on your household income.
One rule catches people out, so it is worth stating plainly: voluntarily dropping COBRA before it runs out does not open a Special Enrollment Period. COBRA actually ending — running out, or a former employer stopping its contribution — generally does. Which of those applies decides whether you can move now or must wait, so check before cancelling anything. See what COBRA is, then how the two compare.
Retiring at 60 through 64 means covering yourself until Medicare eligibility at 65. Individual and Marketplace coverage is one option to weigh against COBRA and a spouse’s employer plan. Premium tax credits are keyed to your estimated household income for the coverage year — not to your assets, and not to last year’s salary — so a year with a modest drawdown and a year with a large distribution can produce very different answers.
If the retirement plan includes moving south of the line for the taxes or the house price, budget for the coverage consequences too: a different Marketplace, a different insurer list, and Medicaid rules that are not the North Carolina ones. Worth modelling before you commit. Start with coverage before Medicare; when 65 is close, our Medicare guidance picks it up.
When your coverage ends depends on the kind of plan your parent has, and the two answers genuinely differ. On a parent’s Marketplace plan you can generally stay covered through December 31 of the year you turn 26, whatever month your birthday falls in. On a parent’s job-based plan, coverage often ends the last day of the month you turn 26 — but employer plans vary, so confirm the exact date with the employer or the plan.
Aging off is a qualifying life event and the Special Enrollment Period runs 60 days before and 60 days after the loss, so you can enroll ahead of the date and start with no gap. Details on getting your own coverage at 26.
Timing and cost
Two things decide whether you can act today or have to wait, and how much help you get when you do.
Outside Open Enrollment you need a qualifying life event to enroll or change plans. The common ones are losing other coverage, moving, marriage, and having or adopting a child. For a loss of coverage the window is 60 days before and 60 days after; most other events give you 60 days from the event itself.
Moving is the one that carries real weight in Waxhaw, and the size of the effect depends entirely on direction. A move north into Mecklenburg keeps you in the same rating area. A move three miles south into South Carolina changes your Marketplace, your insurer list and your Medicaid rules. Either way, a permanent move may open a Special Enrollment Period — but the Marketplace generally requires that you had qualifying health coverage for at least one day in the 60 days before the move, with limited exceptions. More on qualifying life events and their deadlines.
For 2027 coverage, Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Two dates matter rather than one: to have coverage begin January 1 you generally need to enroll by December 15, 2026, and enrolling between December 16 and January 15 usually means a February 1 start.
Renewal deserves a calendar reminder. Doing nothing usually rolls you into a plan for the following year, but that plan can change its cost, its network and its drug list. See the enrollment dates and what each one means.
Where you live decides two separate things, and in Waxhaw the answers point in different directions. On rating, North Carolina sets the geographic premium band by county, and Union is in Area 4 with Mecklenburg — so the county line does not move it. On availability, which insurers are permitted to sell individual plans is also filed by county, and that can differ even between counties in the same rating area. The two mechanisms are separate and both are worth checking rather than assumed.
Premium tax credits are then based on your estimated household income for the coverage year and the plan prices those facts produce. Because the credit is built on an estimate, it is reconciled on your tax return, so a mid-year income change is worth reporting when it happens. The enhanced credits that applied through 2025 expired at the end of that year and have not been renewed, so the income limits are tighter than they were. Read how premium tax credits are calculated, or check where your household sits with our federal poverty level reference.

Why work with us
Union and Mecklenburg share a rating area. If a boundary does not change your price, we say so.
Crossing into South Carolina changes the Marketplace, the insurer list and the Medicaid rules. We work both sides.
You pay the same premium you would pay going direct. The help and the ongoing service are included.
The same agency when your income changes, a plan is discontinued, or a claim goes sideways.
Doctors, hospitals and networks
Waxhaw has emergency care locally but not a full hospital, which shapes what you should be asking a plan to do.
There is a freestanding emergency department in Waxhaw, and it operates administratively as part of the hospital in Monroe rather than as a hospital of its own. For an emergency that distinction usually does not change where you go. For anything that becomes an admission, a surgery or a specialist course of treatment, it means the care happens somewhere else — most often Monroe or Charlotte.
So the network question here has two halves that people tend to collapse into one: the local emergency department, and the hospital or specialist you would actually be sent on to. A plan can look fine on the first and matter a great deal on the second.
Whether a given plan reaches either is not something anyone can promise you in advance, and it is exactly the claim that goes stale between plan years. What we do instead is concrete: before you enroll, we take the actual doctors and facilities you use and check them against the specific plan you are considering. If they are not there, we say so and look at what else Union County offers.

Real client experiences
Verified Google reviews of The Jordan Insurance Agency. Individual experiences vary, and these are agency-wide rather than specific to any one situation.
“My experience with Billy was perfect. My husband passed away and I needed individual insurance by year’s end. Billy helped me find the best insurance for my situation — and it’s affordable. Caring, listening, knowledgeable, and professional.”
“Billy has been taking care of my family insurance for 3 years now. It is always painless, professional and makes my family feel cared for. Another agency was going to charge me HUNDREDS more. Grateful I trusted my instincts.”
“Outstanding customer service with super fast response time. Billy has helped me with landlord, renters, auto, and health. When my health carrier pulled out, he notified me a month in advance and found me a new plan. Highly recommend.”

Good to know
Not the geographic rating factor, no. North Carolina sets that by county across sixteen areas, and Union County sits in Area 4 together with Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Rowan, Anson and Stanly. So a move between Waxhaw and Charlotte does not move your rating area, which is the opposite of what most people expect. What can still differ is availability — which insurers are permitted to sell individual plans in a given county — so it is worth checking rather than assumed either way.
Quite a lot, because these things are set per state rather than per county. You move to a different Marketplace with a different set of insurers and different rating areas, and your Medicaid eligibility rules change too: South Carolina has not expanded Medicaid, while North Carolina did in December 2023. For some households that difference decides what they qualify for entirely. It is worth talking through before a move rather than after.
There is a freestanding emergency department in Waxhaw, but it operates administratively as part of the hospital in Monroe rather than as a hospital in its own right. For an emergency, that distinction usually does not change where you go. For an admission, a surgery or ongoing specialist care, the treatment generally happens elsewhere — most often Monroe or Charlotte — so both belong in the network conversation.
North Carolina’s. Your Marketplace follows where you live, not where you work. If you lose that South Carolina employer plan, the replacement you shop for is a North Carolina plan rated on Union County. The reverse is true for neighbours a few miles south: a Charlotte job does not put a South Carolina resident on the North Carolina Marketplace.
For 2027 coverage, Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. To have coverage start on January 1 you generally need to enroll by December 15, 2026. Enrolling between December 16 and January 15 usually means a February 1 start date.
Three things make the conversation useful: your address, so we can confirm the county of record; a list of the doctors and facilities you actually use, in either state; and a realistic estimate of your household income for the coming year rather than last year’s figure. With those we can tell you what you qualify for and what actually reaches your providers.
No. The Jordan Insurance Agency does not maintain an office in Waxhaw, though it is the closest market to our Charlotte office of anywhere we serve. Our licensed agents work with Union County clients by phone, by video, and in person at Toringdon Way. Most reviews happen by phone or video, and nothing about the help changes either way.
