Serving Lincolnton, NC · Lincoln County
Turning 65, retiring, or taking another look at the coverage you already have? Lincolnton is its own Medicare market — the seat of Lincoln County, with the county’s hospital right downtown. Nearly all the Medicare guidance online was written for Charlotte, the better part of an hour to your south. The Jordan Insurance Agency puts a licensed, local Medicare agent next to you, working from what Lincoln County actually offers.

Why the help matters
Medicare rules are federal and identical everywhere: the same seven-month window around your 65th birthday, the same Part B penalty that stays with you once it attaches, and the same Annual Enrollment Period every fall — October 15 to December 7 — when anyone already on Medicare can change plans for the year ahead. What is local is what you can actually choose, because Medicare Advantage and Part D are arranged county by county. Lincolnton is the seat of Lincoln County, set into the Piedmont northwest of the city on the South Fork of the Catawba. Cross south into Gaston, east over the river toward Mecklenburg, or north into Catawba, and the list changes with the county line. Guidance written for Charlotte is describing someone else’s county.
A national call center
A large call center may route you to a different agent each time, so your doctors, your prescriptions and your history start over with every call.
The Jordan Insurance Agency
A licensed agent who learns your situation, checks it against the doctors and prescriptions you already have, and is still here next year when something changes.
Who this page is for
Your window opens three months before your birthday month. We’ll show you what has to happen inside it and what can wait.
Where to start →Useful for the concepts, wrong for the specifics. Lincolnton is a different county from Charlotte, with its own plan list.
Where to start →Leaving group coverage starts a clock. This is the step that gets planned a month too late more than any other.
Where to start →Whether you can delay Part B safely turns on details most people are never told. Worth confirming before you assume.
Where to start →Coverage, prescriptions and doctors change every year. Each fall’s Annual Enrollment Period is your window to review and switch — a yearly look costs you nothing.
Where to start →Adult children handle a lot of these calls. With your parent’s permission you’re welcome to sit in and ask the questions.
Where to start →What makes Lincolnton its own market
Two things set Lincolnton apart. The first is the county. Medicare Advantage and Part D availability is set county by county, and Lincoln County keeps its own list — separate from Gaston to the south, Mecklenburg across the river, and Catawba to the north. The second is the care. Atrium Health Lincoln, the county’s only acute-care hospital, sits right in Lincolnton on McAlister Road, so day-to-day care here is genuinely local. But local does not settle the plan question: a Medicare Advantage plan is built around a network, and much of the specialty care people here rely on is in Gastonia or down in Charlotte. Whether a plan lines up with the hospital in town and the specialists you drive to is the thing to check, not assume.
The decisions, one at a time
There is no single “best” path through Medicare. What fits depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, how much you travel, and what you want your costs to look like. Here is how we work through each piece.
Your Initial Enrollment Period generally runs seven months — the three months before your birthday month, your birthday month, and the three after. Two things catch people out. Enrollment is not always automatic: if you’re receiving Social Security benefits at least four months before you turn 65, Medicare generally enrolls you in Part A and Part B for you, and otherwise you usually have to act. And waiting until the birthday month itself can push your start date later than you expected.
Come with the doctors you intend to keep, your prescriptions with doses, and whether you or your spouse are still working. More on timing in our guide to when you can enroll in Medicare.
Whether you can delay Part B without a late-enrollment penalty depends on your specific situation, including whether you have group health coverage based on your own or your spouse’s current employment. Employer size can also affect how Medicare coordinates with that coverage, so we check the details before you decide rather than working from a rule of thumb.
When you retire, losing that coverage generally opens a Special Enrollment Period, and it does not stay open indefinitely. The cleanest handoffs are planned a month or two before your last day. Our write-up on working past 65 in North Carolina covers how the two fit together.
Three questions come up constantly: when should Part B start, can I delay it while I’m working, and what happens the month employer coverage ends. We push people to ask early because the Part B late enrollment penalty, once it attaches, generally stays with you for as long as you have Part B. It is not a one-time fee, and it does not care which county you live in.
Background: the late enrollment penalty and how Medicare works alongside employer coverage.
Drug coverage is its own decision with its own timing. Going without creditable prescription drug coverage after you are first eligible can bring a late-enrollment penalty of its own, which is why “I don’t take anything right now” is not quite the whole answer.
Part D is arranged county by county like Advantage, so this is another place where the Lincoln County distinction shows up. Bring the actual prescription list, names and doses. Here is how Part D works.
A supplement works alongside Original Medicare and helps with costs Original Medicare leaves behind. In North Carolina, Medigap plans are standardized by letter, so the basic benefits for a given plan letter are the same from one insurer to the next. Premiums, underwriting, discounts and company service can still differ — which is where the comparison actually happens.
Worth knowing in a rural county with a single hospital: because a supplement works alongside Original Medicare rather than through a network, it is less sensitive to which system a given doctor belongs to. For someone who uses Atrium Health Lincoln here but drives to Gastonia or Charlotte for a specialist, that is a real consideration rather than a recommendation. There is also a health-questions issue if you move to a supplement outside your one-time open window. Background: what a Medicare Supplement is.
Medicare Advantage is another way to receive your Medicare-covered benefits, usually built around a network. The plan has to be offered in Lincoln County, and the doctors you want to keep have to participate — verified one physician at a time.
In Lincolnton that conversation starts with the hospital in town and fans out from there. Atrium Health Lincoln handles a great deal of local care, but a plan still has to be offered in Lincoln County, and the specialists you see — often in Gastonia or across in Charlotte — still have to participate. That split between the hospital downtown and the doctors you drive to is exactly what gets checked before anything is signed. Neither Advantage nor a Supplement is automatically the right answer.

Lincolnton service area
The Jordan Insurance Agency helps Medicare clients throughout Lincolnton and Lincoln County. Denver, Iron Station, Vale, Crouse and Boger City share Lincoln County with you and therefore share your plan list. Head south into Gaston County toward Gastonia, cross the Catawba east into Mecklenburg, or run north into Catawba County, and you are on a different list in each. Because availability follows the county you live in, we verify from your actual address. For local support beyond insurance, Lincoln County Senior Services is a helpful county resource for older residents.
Three ways to do this
Straightforward and quick, and it saves the drive down to Charlotte. One call, your doctor and prescription list in front of you, and we work through it together.
Useful when an adult child wants to sit in from out of town. We can share a screen and walk through the comparison as we go.
You are welcome at our Charlotte office on Toringdon Way if you would rather sit down — but from Lincolnton it is the better part of an hour south, so most people here find the phone or a video call easier. Appointments preferred.

Good to know
Yes. The Jordan Insurance Agency works with Medicare clients throughout Lincolnton and Lincoln County. We don’t keep an office in Lincolnton — our licensed agents handle it by phone, by video, and in person at our Charlotte office on Toringdon Way if you would rather make the drive down.
Yes. Medicare Advantage and Part D availability is set county by county, so Lincoln County residents choose from Lincoln’s list rather than Gaston’s or Mecklenburg’s. It is the reason Charlotte-written guidance can describe options that are not on your list at all.
Not on its own. Atrium Health Lincoln is the county’s only acute-care hospital and handles a lot of local care, but a Medicare Advantage plan is built around a network, so the question is whether a given plan includes that hospital and the doctors you actually use. We check it one physician at a time rather than assume.
It is worth raising early. A network that covers one system will not automatically cover another, and specialty care often means leaving the county. Tell us where you go and we will check participation on each before anything is signed.
Yes, and it is one of the more frequent reasons people here call us. Losing employer coverage generally opens a Special Enrollment Period with its own clock. Reach out a month or two before your last day rather than after it.
They’re structured differently. A Supplement works alongside Original Medicare and helps with costs it leaves behind. Medicare Advantage is another way to receive your Medicare-covered benefits, usually through a network. Neither is universally better — the right fit depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, your travel, and how you want your costs to feel.
Nothing. Our guidance and our help at enrollment are free to you, and you will not pay more for having a licensed agent in your corner.
